School/Community Intervention Program

November 19, 2003

For approximately 20 years, Seward Public Schools have been part of a large network in Nebraska called SCIP. School/Community Intervention Program, or SCIP, is a part of our school services that can help students and families identify causes and behaviors that can interfere with a student's learning and academic success.

SCIP is coordinated and advised by the Lincoln Medical Education Foundation. Each school in the network has a trained team of teachers, administrators, health personnel, and counselors that receive student referrals and assist families in identifying and solving problems.

Students who are having difficulty in school academically, behaviorally, or socially can be referred to the SCIP team. They can be confidentially referred by parents, teachers, or other students. A form to document data on the student's concerns is distributed to teachers, collected and compiled. The team will meet to discuss the confidential information and recommend a plan of action. That plan could include taking no action because there wasn't enough data; monitoring a student for a period of time; intervening with the parents/guardians; or recommending other services available from agencies outside the school.

Each building in the School District of Seward has a team in place. If you would like to make a student referral or get more information on SCIP, please feel free to contact one of the following people: Dave Greathouse at Seward High School, Greg Voss at Seward Middle School or Sondra Southard at Seward Elementary School.

You will be involved in helping the school work with your child to plan positive ways to solve the problem. We will work together to gain academic success and create productive citizens because together we care about youth.
