Some Activities Highlights 2004-2005

Cheerleading (Sponsor Becky
Snyder)
The cheerleaders
participated in a summer camp where they learned new cheers and
routines.
They cheered at all
home games and a few of the away games for
football.
They cheered for all
of the home games for volleyball, basketball and
wrestling matches.
Student Council (Sponsor Becky
Snyder)
Student Council
planned and put on Homecoming which included spirit days, a parade and a
dance. The students also complete
tasks assigned by administrators such as
choosing a student delegate to the School Board.
2004-05 was a great year for
Seward FFA (Sponsor Jack Broderick)
Some of the
chapter's accomplishments were:
- Ten FFA members received the State FFA degree, which is the highest degree that a member can earn on the state level
- One FFA member received the American FFA degree, which is the highest degree that a member can earn on the national level
- The Seward FFA chapter earned a gold certificate in community service at the State FFA Convention
- The Seward FFA chapter was recognized as one of the top 13 chapters in Nebraska and was recognized as a 3 star FFA chapter on the national level, the highest recognition that can be earned
- Ninety eight members and parents traveled to Chicago on an agribusiness trip
- One FFA member was the district FFA extemporaneous speaking champion and earned a silver medal at the state competition
Community service activities were:
- Taking pets over to Sundermann Homes once per week and to the Grand Court assisted living once per month
- Playing games with Sundermann Home residents one night each month
- Hosting a petting zoo at the high school during last week of October
- Cooperating with Skills, FCCLA, Key Club, and FBLA to host a two day blood drive and an October food drive
- Instilling the importance of good nutrition and exercise among its members by initiating activities and a incentive , the wellness program was kicked off with a pumpkin relay, the final activity was a four mile walk in Lincoln and a tour of the UNL football stadium
- The FFA started their first "FFA soup kitchen" for Seward's Food Net program. Beginning in November through February, FFA members made chili once per month and donated it to Food Net.
- In addition to the community service activities, FFA members were active selling poinsettias, fruit and running concessions. These fund raising activities provided an opportunity for the FFA members to travel to Chicago and other related FFA budget items.
- FFA members were kept busy during the summer by attending the Washington Leadership Conference, hosting their first swine extravaganza and being involved with the County Fair's livestock exhibition, petting zoo, and public relations booth.
- Beginning in September and ending in December, FFA members promoted agriculture once per month for the senior high staff and students by feeding them fruit, dairy products, pork, and beef during their lunch period. In addition to the great food samples, promotional items were given as door prizes.
Key Club (Sponsor Karista
Ackerman)
In the past
year Key Club has been busy with various projects. At the beginning
of the school year they had Key Club membership week. This is a
week filled with activities to try to get more students to join Key
Club. In the fall they helped the Kiwanis delivery phone books to
the residents of Seward. Key Club went out into the Seward
Community one night and did Trick or Treat for UNICEF. In November
Key Club helped with the Honey Drive to help raise money for
individuals with development disabilities. Key Club joined with
other clubs in the High School to have a Blood Drive and then a
Food Bank Drive. The Key Club put together shoe boxes full of toys
and dropped them off in Lincoln for less fortunate children during
the holidays. In January they had a Multicultural Fair for children
to come and learn about various countries and how their cultures
are different from one to the other. In April, the Key Clubbers not
only got ready for their prom they put on a prom for the Senior
Citizens of Seward. One of the final projects that they completed
in the past year was a walk-a-thon.
FBLA (Sponsor Kathy
McKown)
Nebraska Future
Business Leaders of America (FBLA) prepares students for leadership
and career opportunities. It is the largest student
business organization in Nebraska with over 5,000 members in more
than 130 secondary and middle schools. Offering innovative leadership
and career development programs, FBLA brings students and business
together in a positive working relationship.
2004-2005, FBLA chapter received the Sweepstakes Award at the State Leadership Conference. This award required multiple tasks as an organization. These tasks included: Partnership With Business Report, Community Service Project, School Service Projects,Contribution to the Nebraska Competency/Scholarship Fund, Linkage Project with the Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club, March of Dimes Contribution, $600, MADD Contribution, $125, Recruitment of SLC competitive sponsor, Jones National Bank, Recruitment of a Professional member, and maintaining a chapter web site.
Individual Awards; All-State Quality Members, Teresa Cousins, Ashley Elwell, Scrapbook Design, Nicole Leff, Honorable Mention Computer Concepts, Kyle Love,
Honorable Mention Programming Visual Basic, Dustin Hegy, and NINTH in the State, Public Speaking, Roger Cattle.
