School District of Seward Nutrition Services 2005-2006

December 12, 2006

The school food service program offers an economical and convenient option for school day meals. A full priced meal includes a combination of milk, vegetable, fruit, bread, and meat or other protein rich food. The district receives federal subsidies for each meal it serves that fits that guide. A breakfast program helps students get a good start to their school day. All meals meet the dietary guidelines of the National School Lunch and Breakfast program.

  • The food service program serves breakfast to about 50 students each school day at the middle school.
  • The food service lunch program serves about 900 children each school day within the district. School lunch services also prepare meals for about 100 parochial school students each day

As our lunch accounts are not debit accounts, parents are encouraged to pre-pay to their child's meal account. Students need only use their ID number to access meals. Free and reduced price meals are available. An application process determines eligibility and those applications are available at the district office.

A food service committee composed of students, teachers, parents, administrators, and board members reviewed the food service program as part of the development of wellness plans in the district. This committee made recommendations for changes in the program to be implemented over the next three years, which the board of education approved. Changes in the past two years have included a veggie and fruit bar designed for elementary students, more daily choices for middle school students, and fewer high fat offerings in the ala carte high school service. Salad bars were added at the middle school and high school buildings.

A breakfast program for the elementary school will be implemented in the 2006-2007 school year. Convection ovens will be installed in each building kitchen to reduce the amount of deep-fat fried offerings. The Wellness Committee will continue to meet and new guidelines for nutrition may impact the food service program.
