SkillsUSA
Seward High had 28 students compete at the SkillsUSA State Championships in Columbus.
The SkillsUSA chapter had 15 first place championship medals, 2 runner-up medals and 3 third place medals at State.
The SkillsUSA chapter qualified 13 students to represent Seward High School at the National Skills and Leadership Conference in Kansas City.
The Seward SkillsUSA chapter had the highest number of national qualifiers of all the high school chapters in the state.
FFA
Tweleve Seward FFA members received the State FFA degree.
One Seward FFA member received the American FFA degree.
Seward FFA was the district senior parliamentary procedure champion.
Ashley Elwell was the district natural resource speaker champion.
Seward FFA Chapter was recognized as a Premier FFA Chapter. This honor goes to the top 10% or 13 Chapters in Nebraska. The Chapter's application will compete for national honors in November.
65 FFA members and parents traveled to Minneapolis, Minnesota on a three day agribusiness trip.
Cheerleading
The cheerleaders had a great year. They cheered at all of the home events and some of the away football and basketball events.
Spanish
22 Students traveled to Costa Rica and express their gratitude to all who helped to give them this life changing experience.
Key Club
August: Key Club officers got together to plan when we were going to do our membership week. We also scheduled all of our meetings through the school year. We talked about goals that we had for our club for the 2005-2006 school year.
September: We had our membership week. We had an activity for each day of the week to try to recruit students to join Key Club. We also helped out the Booster Club by doing Split-the-Pot at some football games to help them raise money for the Boosters Club. We had our monthly meeting with the entire club and then our officers had their weekly meetings.
October: We kept ourselves busy through the month of October. We were involved with many concession stands at football games and volleyball games. One Saturday morning we helped the Kiwanis deliver phone books throughout the Seward Community. We teamed up with FFA, FBLA, and FCCLA for a food drive to donate food to the food bank. We babysat one night when they had a guest speaker at the High School, so parents did not have to worry about looking for someone to watch their children. We had our monthly meeting with the entire club and then our officers had their weekly meetings. At our entire club meeting we inducted our new members.
November: This was probably our busiest month out of the whole school year. First we held our annual Trick-or-Treat for Unicef. Almost our entire club participated in this activity, we raised over five hundred dollars. Then we teamed up with FFA, FBLA, FCCLA, and Skills USA to have a Blood Drive for the community of Seward. Then we took a trip Omaha to participate in Holiday Social. We got together with other Key Clubs throughout Nebraska and Iowa to find out what they were doing. We sent students from our club over once a week to help students at St. Vincent's with their Reading Classics team. We also gathered different toys and hygiene products to donate to the Operation Christmas program that the Salvation Army sponsors. Many of our members participated in Honey Sunday to raise money for people with Developmental Disabilities. As usual we held our entire club meeting and our weekly officer meetings.
December: We continued to go over to St. Vincent's to help out with their Reading Classics team. We started another fundraiser. We sold suckers to raise money for our club. Then we started to finish making the final touches on our Multicultural Fair for the next month. We had our monthly meeting for our entire club and then our weekly meetings for our officers.
January: We held our Multicultural Fair. We spent many days making posters for the fair and food. We spent a day setting up for the fair. We had about five hundred elementary students attend the Fair.
February: We started to have meetings with the junior class to prepare for their prom and then our Senior Citizens Prom. We also had our monthly meeting for our entire club and then the weekly meetings for the officers.
March: This month we were busy putting together reports to take to our District competition. We also spent time working on our scrapbook to take to the District competition. We continued to work with the junior class to prepare for prom. We elected new officers for the 2006-2007 school year. We had a meeting at Valentino's to induct our new officers.
April: We continued to make preparations for the Senior Citizen's Prom. The last Friday in April we held our annual Senior Citizen’s Prom. People came from the Seward community and a couple came from out of town. We just had short club meetings this month.
May: We sponsored Teacher's Appreciation Week. Each day for a week we did something for the teachers. They either received a gift or there was food for breakfast and desert provided for them in the teacher's lounge.
These are just some of the main projects that Key Club worked on this past school year. This report is brief and does not include our members going over and helping out the Builders Club.
FBLA
FBLA achieves the Sweepstakes Award for the nineth consecutive year at the State Leadership Conference in Omaha. This includes: Community Service Projects, Partnership With Business Project, Partnership with the Chamber of Commerce, and Rotary Club. In addition, 14 FBLA members earned awards and recognition in competitive business events. Two members received All-State Quality Member Award.
Middle School Vocal Music
We had a very successful year in the vocal music department. In January, Megan Lee and Kenny Stratton were chosen to sing in the University of Nebraska in Omaha Heartland Honor Choir. These were taped auditions with only 70 students chosen from around Nebraska.
Seven seventh and eighth grade boys participated in the Henderson Boy's Festival on January 27. Over 200 boys sang for a guest clinician.
Megan Lee and Kenny Stratton were chosen to sing in the taped audition state honor choir sponsored by the Nebraska Choral Directors on January 28.
Bianca Timasi and Megan Lee were chosen to represent Nebraska in the taped audition American Choral Directors Six State Regional Convention March 1-4. Bianca sang in the Children's Choir and Megan in the Middle Level. They worked with a nationally known clinician for 3 days and presented a public concert at the Holland Center for Performing Arts in Omaha, Ne. Only 20 students from each state are chosen to sing in these honor choirs.
On March 25 the Eighth Grade Concert Choir went to contest at East Butler Public Schools. They had 43 entries of solos, duets, trios, quartets, and larger ensembles. We received 27 superior ratings and 16 excellent ratings. The Eighth Grade Concert Choir received a superior rating.
Michelle Ness was chosen to sing in a taped audition honor choir at Meridian Public Schools. 70 students are chosen from southeast Nebraska to sing in this choir.
FCCLA
The theme for the year was "Deal Me In", The Seward FCCLA had a membership of 70 members. In October they hosted the District II Leadership conference at Seward High. They held an elementary health fair in November where they educated four hundred and forty elementary students about various health topics. Twenty members traveled to Albuquerque, New Mexico to attend a regional FCCLA meeting in November. December found chapter members helping with various community Christmas events. FCCLA District II STAR events were held in January with twenty-six members entered in eleven different competitive events.
Six members in four different events advanced to State competition held in April. At State five participants earned a silver medal and one received a bronze award. In February members and students participated in National FCCLA week with activities planned for every day. Nineteen chapter members were involved in the Lunch Buddie program at the elementary. The program matches up a 1st grader and a FCCLA member. At the annual parent-member banquet twenty-three members were recognized for their efforts. The chapter received the SILVER chapter award at State Leadership conference for their programs/activities. Three senior students, Leah Friedrich, Cheri Wadas, and Dani Schultz received a $150 scholarship for their involvement during their high school career. The year concluded with a chapter trip for fourteen of the outstanding members.
TEACHER-Linda Zimbelmann, FCS teacher at Seward High was recognized by Planned Parenthood as Educator of the Year. The award recognized excellent efforts to increase awareness and knowledge about human sexuality and it role in the development of the total person.
Student Council
Student Council put on a very nice Homecoming Dance. The theme was Mardi Gras. They also started a new endeavor this year, selling spirit t-shirts. It was a learning experience for all involved. They will continue this endeavor next year with a few modifications.
