Seward Middle School Principal's Report

October 18, 2007
We had a very productive professional development day on September 17. We have formed a literacy team at Seward Middle School. Teachers serving on this committee are Kelly Stelling, Jamie Hayden, Cami Prochnow, Juanita Hill, Deb Sloup, Jackie Vanis and Nickie Kouma. The purpose of this committee is to get all students reading at their grade level and to meet the goals and objectives of the middle school improvement plan. Lynette Block, a reading coordinator from the NDE, met with the team on September 17. We began mapping out our reading curriculum getting ready to incorporate Reading Mastery as a reading intervention next school year. All other staff worked in the curricular professional learning communities on their mission, goals and norms for the year. In the afternoon, everyone attended a presentation by Jen Madison on vocabulary instruction.
Constitution Day was celebrated the week of September 17. Students in all grade level social studies classes did activities or curriculum specifically targeted at the U.S. Constitution such as the Bill of Rights and the three Articles (branches of government).
The office staff and myself were trained on the use of the new security/surveillance system. The system is easy to use and works very well. Students have been aware that there are cameras in the building, which has helped with overall behavior and safety.
The Plum Creek Literacy Festival was October 4. Students and teachers attended presentations from Peg Kehret and Andrew Clements. We would like to thank Concordia University and all committee members that organize this event for our students.
The Be Healthy Day was held October 5. Under the direction of Mr. Sloup, students attended mini-sessions on exercise, stress management, and healthy eating. They also walked to Plum Creek Park for games and sports clinics conducted by Concordia coaches and student-athletes.
Students in the 6th and 8th grades will be asked to complete the Nebraska Risk and Protective Factor Student Survey about substance abuse and antisocial behavior. Parents will receive a letter detailing the survey.
Congratulations to Michelle Looky, 6th grade math teacher. Michelle was awarded a $10,000 grant through the Qwest Foundation/Nebraska Department of Education Technology Innovation grant. Michelle is going to integrate technology into her math curriculum with the money.
