On October 15th, the Seward teachers participated in a comprehensive mini-conference focused on the uses of technology in the classroom. Late last spring, teachers were surveyed as to their personal strengths and reservations in the use of various forms of technology. This information was used to design a “mini-conference”, hosted at the high school, which offered sessions related to the needs of the teachers. As students are “digital natives”, many adults are “digital immigrants” and require additional time and instruction to raise their skill level to a point where it can be effective as a teaching tool.
Various teachers across the district, administrators, and experts from outside of the school system shared their expertise in multiple sessions throughout the day. Teachers were required to attend 4 sessions from topics, some of which included:
- The use of handheld devices to obtain levels of understanding from students in their classrooms (eInstruction)
- Advanced Microsoft Word application
- Web searches and literacy for classroom application
- The use of webpage design software for distributing information and additional resources to students
- Digital imaging
- Excel spreadsheets and graphs to record and analyze data
- Exploration of curriculum resources on the web
- Podcasting, iMovie, and iDVD related to creating multimedia projects in the classroom and as an information delivery method
- Designing teacher pages on the school website
While designing and coordinating this “mini-conference” required a tremendous amount of time and energy, many comments were received as to the value of this day to hone teachers’ technology skills.
