Professional Development - November

by Brad Best

February 04, 2008

On November 21st, the goals of the professional development day was to address needs of teachers specific to each building and to update the entire staff on the new safety, emergency and crisis procedures.

During the morning session, the elementary school worked with a state department representative to discuss a new requirement for Response to Intervention (RTI).  This is a set of regulations that governs the steps required for instructional interventions prior to the possibility of identifying students for special services.  Those elementary staff members not involved in this planning conducted team meetings to work on curriculum, math assessment, vocabulary and reading data information.  At the middle school, the morning was dedicated to the continuation of work with Lynette Block from the Department of Education on formulating a comprehensive plan for providing differentiated reading instruction.  Other teachers at the middle school worked on building-level school improvement goals, curriculum, vocabulary, the review of data, and math assessments.  High school teachers used the morning to work on many of the same topics specific to the high school and to review, in detail, their building level school improvement goals and program initiatives.

The afternoon of the 21st brought all of the teachers to the high school theatre to discuss the new security system and procedures.  The emergency response plans related to events from asthma attacks to building intruders were discussed with the staff and the new system was reviewed in detail.  Materials and other information were distributed and discussions were held to ensure that we are prepared to protect our students in a multitude of potentially dangerous situations.
