Seward High’s Ryan Coufal, a junior, placed fourth and medaled in the Nebraska School Activities (NSAA) annual state speech contest for class B held on Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at the University of Nebraska at Kearney in extemporaneous speaking. He competed in two preliminary rounds, placing first and second with superior ratings in both rounds. The question he drew for the final round asked “What can be done to correct the problems with the flu shots next year?” He was given one hour to research, write and present his six minute speech, with no note card! This is Coufal’s first year as a member of the speech team at Seward High and his first year as a state qualifier.
Holly Kosisek-Seher, an SHS senior and Robert Kolterman, an SHS junior, qualified for state speech in duet acting. They received superior ratings, however, did not break into finals. Eric Heinicke, an SHS junior, was also a state qualifier, competed in extemporaneous speaking and received excellent ratings.
The Seward team is coached by Clark Kolterman, a speech/drama and English instructor at SHS.
