Seward High Students Sweep NFWC District Fine Arts Music Contest

The six students from Seward High won all the first place and first runner-up honors at the recent GFWC Nebraska Federation of Women’s Clubs District IV Fine Arts Festival in the performing arts division.  The contest winners each receive a $100 scholarship to attend a summer  fine arts camp setting of their choice.  The contest was held Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at the Seward Civic Center in the auditorium and was free and open to the public.  The students were sponsored by the GFWC Seward Women’s Club and the GFWC Seward Junior Women’s Club.  The local federated clubs sponsored and  paid the entry fees for the students from Seward High.

 

The winners included…

            Piano Solo-Grace Smetter-Freshman-First Place-Scholarship Recipient

                               Ashley Leising-Freshman-First Runner-Up-Alternate

            Instrumental Solo-Megan Lee-Sophomore-First Place-Scholarship Recipient

                                          Alex Koehler-Sophomore-First Runner-Up-Alternate

            Vocal Solo-Claire Miner-Sophomore-First Place-Scholarship Recipient

                               Kenny Stratton-Sophomore-First Runner-Up-Alternate

 

The students are directed by SHS instructor Leslie Stratton and assisted by Pam McConnell, accompanist.  The judges for the contest were Dr. David Held and Professor Andy Schultz of Concordia University.  Local chair for the Fine Arts Festival was Jean Kolterman for the GFWC Seward Womens Club and Julie Biggs for the GFWC Seward Junior Women’s Club.
