Spring is finally here! We have a lot of great news and many activities the months of April and May at Seward Middle School.
Important Events:
9th Grade Registration: Mr. Denker, Mrs. Schwahn, and Mr. Greathouse met with all the 8th graders during the day on April 8 to for pre-registration of 9th grade classes. The high school will be holding it's first spring orientation day on Monday, April 28 at 2:00. All head coaches sponsors will be available to present talk about their sport and activity. Students will be able to tour the facility. There will be an additional 9th grade orientation day in August as well.
5th Grade Orientation: The 5th grade orientation has been scheduled for May 1. Fourth graders will tour the building during the day from 9:00-11:00. Parents are invited to an orientation meeting that evening in the middle school gym at 7:00.
April 15: 6th grade vocal music spring concert 7:00 p.m.
April 22: 6th grade band concert 6:30 p.m.
April 28: Jazz Band concert 6:00 p.m.
April 29: 7th/8th Track vs. Crete @ SHS 4:30 p.m.
News:
• Reading Classic is a competition to get students excited in reading. Students are given a list of books to read then compete against other schools. Teams in grades 5-7 meet once or twice after school from January to March. Sponsors for Reading Classic are Kelly Stelling and Jamie Hayden- grade 5, Cami Prochnow-grade 6 and Juanita Hill-grade 7. Each grade-level team participated in the Reading Classic competition at Centennial on March 15. The 7th grade team of Sarah Moody, Emily Thrailkill, Peyton Guenther, Tasha Tieken, Sierra Penas, and Lauren Shepherd placed 1st at Centennial, then moved on to place 2nd at the state competition on April 5 in Hebron.
• The following students were recognized for their musical talents at the Meridian Honor Band and Malcolm Music Contest: Arianna Bohning, Lauren Shepherd, Alyssa Sleight, Eric Turner, Sam Brauer, Samantha Hayek, Katie Hughes, Erin Miller, Abbi Hanson, Dario Gonzalez, Brett Shaw, Alex Bainter, Ashlyn Hanson, Curtis Koch, Grace Halder, Emily Thrailkill, Makayla Forsythe, Brandi Fiala, Bianca Tamasi, Kirsten Schmidt, Jackie Uhing, Eden Pridgen, Alyssa Hans, and Kyrie Knickerbocker. Articles and pictures have been provided to Seward County Independent.
• Each year an 8th grade student is chosen by the 8th grade team, Mr. Weatherholt, and me to represent Seward Middle School at the University of Nebraska Breakfast of Champions. This year, Sam Brauer was chosen at our representative. Sam and his parents will attend the breakfast and ceremony on Friday, May 16. The Lincoln Journal-Star will honor all these middle school students in a special Breakfast of Champion publication in May.
• During the fourth quarter, we are sponsoring three After School Clubs. Classes being offered are Great Hair Designs, Frisbee Golf and Cooking.
• Students in Mrs. Oates’ health visited the Health Fair at the Ag Pavilion on April 2.
• The middle school track teams had their first meet on Tuesday, April 8 with Aurora and York. The 7th grade girls placed 1st while the boys tied for 2nd. The 8th grade girls and boys both placed 3rd.
