Seward High Quiz Bowl Team Ends Year with Central Conference Runner-up Trophy!

The Seward High School Quiz Bowl team defeated every team until the final championship round at the annual Central Conference Quiz Bowl tourney, losing only to the Crete Quiz Bowl team. The SHS Quiz Bowl team was award the first runner-up trophy, concluding an overall, successful quiz bowl season for the team. The Central Conference tourney was held at the Seward Civic Center on Wednesday, April 29, 2009, hosted by Seward High School.
SHS entered two teams in the Central Conference Quiz Bowl. Team A was Theresa Honeycutt-Captain, Andrew Sorsen, Mandi Drohman and Eric Heinicke. Team B included John Wiemer and Titus Tvrdy-Co-captains, Katie Thrailkill, Carson Sheperd and Brock Lewis.
In the morning, the SHS A team defeated all four schools with four wins and placed in second seed in the round robin event. The SHS B team won two and lost two games and was fourth seed in the afternoon single elimination tourney. In the afternoon, the B team lost in the first round to York High School. The SHS A team defeated Fairbury and Grand Island Northwest, losing only to Crete in the championship.
The 2009 Central Conference Quiz Bowl was won Crete High School, First Runner-Up was Seward High, Second Runner-Up was Grand Island Northwest and Third Runner-Up was York High School.
Local readers for the tourney included Bonnie Kruse, Anitia Wollenberg and Tonia Nantkes. SHS students, Carson Sheperd, Jamal Robinson and Nick Oliver served as timers and scorers for the rounds of questions.
SHS instructor, Clark Kolterman is the coach for the team and served as the Central Conference Quiz Bowl Chairman, assisted by Steve Borer, SHS Athletic Director and Jason Schaffer, Asst. Athletic Director. The team is funded by the School District of Seward High Ability Learner Program.
