Seward Volleyball Dominates in Season Opener

by Kylee Pernicek

September 11, 2009

It was a strong season opener for the Lady Jays when they swept the Columbus Lakeview ViQueens, beating them 25-12, 25-12, and 25-23.

Leading the Jays in kills was middle hitter, Syd DeBoer, with seven, followed by outside hitter, Zoie Smetter, with six. Emily Cady was big at the net, blocking 11 balls in aces and assists and hitting four kills.  DeBoer also had a good game at the net hitting seven kills and blocking eight attacks. Out of 83 attacking attempts, 27 of them were kills.  Grace Smetter led the team in ace serves, serving four, followed by Kylee Pernicek who served two.

“Our serving and serve receive wasn’t as good as I would’ve liked.  It is something we will definitely work on in practice before our next game,” commented coach Pallas.  Overall, the team was excited about their win at home.  Senior Kelsey Weatherholt said, "We did a good job but there are still things that we need to work on.  It added to the excitement that we had a bigger student section than we have had in the past."
