Jays Capture Conference!

Softball Goes 3-0 at Tournament

by Amber Topil

October 06, 2009

The softball team traveled to Fairbury on October 3rd to play in the conference tournament.  The girls started off strong beating Grand Island Northwest 12-2.  Bryanna Goldsmith pitched the first game, allowed two hits, and had five strikeouts.  The game ended early due to the “ten runs after four innings” rule.  Beth Bohuslavsky went 3 for 3 on the game.  “Just put the bat on the ball, and get it done,” quoted Bohuslavsky.

Next the Lady Jays faced Fairbury.  After defeating the Lady Jeffs twice in the season, and one including a 13-inning marathon, Fairbury was seeking revenge.  The Jeffs also had home field advantage. However, Seward didn’t let any of that bother them.  Scoring in the first inning, it seemed things were off to a good start.  The Jays scored again in the third, but let one of the Jeffs come in.  This made the score 2-1, which went on to be the final score.  Goldsmith had the only hit of the game.  Brittany Telecky rounded up seven strikeouts on the mound.

Lastly, Seward faced the Crete Cardinals for the third time this year.  The previous matches were tough battles, so the Jays were prepared to play a strong team.  Once again, the girls went up early in the first innings, due to an error by the Cardinals.  The Jays didn’t score again until Goldsmith hit in a run in the 4th inning.  The outfield had some outstanding catches to seal the victory.  The outfield includes Grace Snavely in right, Audrey Barker in center, and Tiffany Alvarez in left.  Telecky tacked on 12 strikeouts.  “We haven’t let our outfield play much this year, but it’s nice to know we can count on them if it comes down to that,” quoted Coach Piskorski.

There were quality teams at the conference tournament, but the schedule will only get harder for the Jays.  The Jays will host districts on October 8th and 9th, with their kickoff game at 1:00 on Thursday versus the winner of Norris and Waverly.  The district tournament is filled with ranked class B teams.  It will be a true test for the Jays.
