The Lady Jays started off the tournament at Archbishop Bergan High School on Thursday night. Their first opponent was Omaha North. Seward won 25-9 and 25-6. Laural Wagner and Alyssa Kamphaus both led the team with six kills. Kylee Pernicek led the team in aces with three, followed by Miranda Wisehart and Zoie Smetter with two each. Both serve receive and digging accuracy was over 90%.
In their second game of the night, Seward beat West Point Central Catholic 25-9 and 25-10. Emily Cady finished the match with six kills while outside hitter Laural Wagner finished with five. Emily Cady was also tough at the net, having four ace blocks. Alyssa Kamphaus had two stuff blocks. The Jays had nine serving aces, Miranda Wisehart with three, Kylee Pernicek and Kelsey Weatherholt with two, and Laural Wagner with one.
The hardest game of the night came against the Fremont Bergan Knights. Seward defeated them 25-19 and 25-21. Emily Cady was the standout at the net, having ten kills and two stuff blocks. Zoie Smetter and Laural Wagner each finished the game with five kills. The team finished the game with five ace serves. The defense struggled a little bit, committing six errors on serve receive and six errors in digs.
The team went back to Fremont on Saturday to finish the tournament. Their first game was against Omaha Roncalli. Seward won 25-10 and 25-11. Emily Cady finished the game with five kills, followed by Alyssa Kamphaus and Syd DeBoer who each had four. Emily Cady also put up five stuff blocks. Miranda Wisehart served three aces.
In the championship game, the Lady Jays faced the Bennington Badgers. Even though the Jays beat the Badgers earlier this year at the Seward tournament, this game had a different outcome. Seward lost its second game of the year, 25-17 and 25-22. “We got flustered and didn’t handle ourselves very well,” commented senior setter Miranda Wisehart. Seward’s frustration came from their 11 attacking errors and six serve receive errors. Syd DeBoer led the team with seven kills while Zoie Smetter added five. Once again, Miranda Wisehart finished the game with three serving aces. Overall, the game was a learning experience for the Jays. “We know what we need to work on for the tough games ahead,” replied coach Pallas.
