Defense was the key in Fairbury on September 15th. Neither the Jays nor the Jeffs could score in the regulation seven innings. The softball diamond was tense as the teams entered international tiebreaker. Each team starts with a runner on second base. The first team to score more in an inning wins. Tiffany Alvarez said, “I really wish we could’ve gotten the bats going in regulation. We gave our parents gray hairs by making the game go 13 innings. That’s one inning shy of two games.”
Beginning with the 8th inning, neither team could tack up a run. However, the following four innings, each team earned one run. It was getting late, wet, and tiring; but the Jays were far from giving in. “The bench was pumped, there was so much energy, if only we were that excited throughout the whole game,” quoted Grace Snavely. Finally, in the top of the 13th Tatum Peery hit in the 6th run for the Jays. Six was the magic number. Seward held the Jeffs off in the bottom of the inning to capture the 6-4 victory.
