Seward Jays fought hard this past Friday
against last year’s defending Class B state champs, the Aurora
Huskies.
Aurora opened the scoring on its first
possession gaining 72 yards in 17 plays. They scored on a one yard
pass but didn’t get the two-point conversion at the end of the
first quarter and the score was then 6-0.
Seward was forced to punt after a block
eliminated a first down run by Chase Wurdeman.
Aurora took the ball at the Seward 43 and
headed down the field. Aurora fumbled in the endzone on first and
goal and Delton Werth recovered the ball giving Seward a first and
ten at the twenty-yard line with ten minutes left in the second
quarter. Seward failed to score.
It was Aurora’s ball and they scored with
4:13 left to play. Aurora was successful with their second try at a
two-point conversion to make the score 14-0.
On Aurora’s first possession of the second
half Daniel Buss intercepted the ball at the Bluejay 30-yard line.
Chase Koch proceeded to run the ball 70 yards for the touchdown and
Koch also got the PAT to make the score 14-7.
With 10:03 left to play in the game, Aurora
took the pitch 11 yards up the middle to add six more points for
the Huskies, stretching the lead to 21-7.
Seward responded eight plays later on an
18-yard run by Wurdeman. Koch’s PAT made the margin 21-14. This was
the final score.
“This would have been a nice one to get,”
said Coach Welch.
Wurdeman led the Jays with 87 yard on 23
carries. Koch added 75 yards on 9 carries.
For the defense, Blake Vajgrt, Logan
Henning, and Richie Graves each had three solo tackles. Werth added
13 assists.
