Seward High Honored at the Captiol

Students from Seward High represented the SHS participants from the 2015 Nebraska State Fair Educational activities at a recent gathering of the awardees at the Nebraska State Capitol Rotunda on Friday, February 27th at an 8:00 am ceremony sponsored by the Nebraska Sesquicentennial Commission, the Nebraska State Fair Education Department and the NEBRASKAland Foundation.  The Seward students were awarded the “Top High School in Nebraska –Sweepstakes Award-First Place “-2015 for having the most participants in the 2015 Nebraska State Fair Educational activities and the most awardees in the same program this year as well.   The Nebraska State Fair Education program is sponsored by the NEBRASKAland Foundation, Inc.

The students attending the event in the capitol included Wyatt Shafer, Stacey Damanhoury, Makenna Aldrich, Clarke Chandler, Jayden Germer, and Chris Galusha.  The advisor/sponsor attending was Assistant Principal Kevin Simmerman.  Pam Franck and Clark Kolterman are the teacher sponsors for the group.

The students accepted the State Fair Sweepstake trophy for the school in the morning from the Executive Director of the State Fair Education Division-Judi Harper of Grand Island, enjoyed a tour of the Capitol and met with their State Senator Mark Kolterman.  They also were able to sit in the gallery of the Legislature to observe the proceedings of the Nebraska Legislature, which was in session, before returning home to school.

The SHS students are sponsored in the Educational Activities at the Nebraska State Fair by the School District of Seward and the School District of Seward High Ability Learner program (HAL).  Contests at the State Fair in the Educational Division range from Shakespeare Monologue in costume,  Improv Team, Impromptu Speaking, Quiz Bowl, Cup Stacking, Art, Computer Graphics, Community Service Projects, Science Fair Projects, tests in Grammar, Spelling, History, Science, Math, Essay, Poetry, and even Penmanship-to name a sampling.
