Emma Orwen Selected Fine Arts Youth of the Month for October

SHS Senior, Emma Orwen, was selected the Seward High Fine Arts Youth of the Month. She is a very involved student in a variety of areas of Fine Arts.

Emma is a musician, and enjoys the SHS Marching Bluejay, Marching Band-serving as a Drum Major for the band and a Trombone Section leader for two years.  She is First Chair for the trombone in Symphonic Band and lettered in the SHS Band for three years.  She has received Superior Ratings at District Music Contest and the Band Member of the Year Award.  She is involved in Pep Band, Jazz Band and participated in numerous Honor Bands throughout her career.  Emma is an assistant band director for the 7th and 8th grade bands, takes private Trombone lessons, was a member of the Masonic All-Star Marching Band and selected for the All-State Orchestra.  She is a member of the board of directors for the Seward Municipal City Band and received the First Place Award at the GFWC/NFWC District Music Contest, sponsored by the GFWC Seward Woman’s Club.  She is a member of the SHS Swing Choir Band.

She is a longtime member of the SHS One Acts cast, performing in the annual competition piece.  She continues to participate in the VFW Voice of Democracy Speech contest and was a Finalist and a member of the SHS Speech team in Serious Prose, Poetry and Extemporaneous Speaking.  She also placed second and third the last two years in Poetry Out Loud in the local contest.  She has also participated in a series of Drama/Speech workshops at Concordia University.

She is a member of Skills USA and participated in the State and National contests, as she was the State Champion in Advertising and Design.  Emma is also a longtime member of the SHS Quiz Bowl team and participated in several of the GFWC/NFWC Writing Workshops.

She continues to win at the GFWC Seward Woman’s Clubs Art Contests in Acrylic/Oil, Chalk and Portrait-winning Best of Show!

She was recently honored at UNL in the Fine Arts Department with honors in the Visual Arts and Instrumental Music, named a UNL Young Arts Awardee.

Emma plans to attend UNL and major in Music Performance.

She is the daughter of Chad and Kim Orwen of Seward.
