SHS and SMS Quiz Bowl Teams Each Named Third Runner Up at Prestigious Lincoln Northeast Quiz Bowl

The prestigious, long running Lincoln Northeast Quiz Bowl “Brain Brawl” was held on Saturday, April 23 at an all-day event at Lincoln Northeast High School for area freshman and middle school quiz bowl teams.  The quiz bowl featured questions on general knowledge!  The contest was held for Middle School and freshman teams and in its 19^th year of sponsorship by Lincoln Northeast High School!  Seward High entered two freshmen teams and the Seward Middle School entered two eighth grade teams.

The SHS freshmen teams played four contests in the morning “round robin event’ and were seeded second and fourth teams, going into the afternoon single elimination event based on wins/losses and points generated.  In the afternoon, Team A defeated Tekamah-Herman and lost to Creighton Prep, and played Elkhorn South for the third place trophy, losing to them and were named third runner up in the event! 

The SMS Quiz Bowl teams also played four rounds in the morning for placement and seeding.  After the morning event, the SMS Team A was the fifth seed and SMS Team B was the 19^th seed.  In the afternoon, the Seward B team defeated Omaha Christian and lost to Beveridge MS Quiz Bowl team.  The SMS Team A defeated Lux Middle School and Irving Middle school and then lost to Brownell-Talbot Team A of Omaha and eventually lost to Brownell Talbot Team B of Omaha for third place.  The SMS Team was awarded the Third Runner Award at the tourney as well!

Members of the SHS Freshman team A included Ryan Wall-Captain, Garrett Kuss, Kiernan Baker and Jack Yelden. SHS Quiz Bowl Team B were Sheldon Bale, Jax Johnson, Brady Smith and Alex Sackesky.

Schools involved in the tourney included Andersen, Beveridge, Brownell-Talbot, Creighton Prep, Cross County, Elkhorn, Elkhorn South, Irving, King Science and Technology Magnet School, Lux, Mickle, Norris, Omaha Christian, Seward, St. Joseph, St. Mary’s, St. Michael’s, Tekamah-Herman.

Clark Kolterman serves as the sponsor/coach for the SHS Freshman teams and Greg Miller serves as the coach/sponsor for the SMS Quiz Bowl teams. The teams are sponsored by the School District of Seward and the Seward Schools High Ability Learner Program (HAL)!
