Mettenbrink Named Youth Rotarian of the Month at Seward Rotary Club

Named the August Youth Rotarian of the Month was SHS Senior, Evan Mettenbrink of Seward.  His is the son of Mike and Laurie Mettenbrink of Seward.  He was recognized and honored at the August  24 Seward Rotary Club meeting, held at the noon luncheon at the auditorium of the Jones National Bank and Trust of Seward.  Evan was recognized for his outstanding career at SHS both academically and with a variety of extracurricular activities while in high school.

Evan is an outstanding athlete at Seward High, participating and leading the Seward Cross Country Team-serving this year as the team captain and achieving a variety of awards in the program.  He is also very involved in the SHS Track program and was a State Qualifier in the 4x8!  He has also participated in the local Baseball program and was a member of the SHS Basketball team.  He has been awarded many athlete/scholar awards as well as a strong contender athletically too!

He is an outstanding volunteer in the high school-involved in many aspects of Skills USA-currently serving as a state officer-state treasurer and qualifying for national competition three times!  He was a Skills USA National Champion in Medical Math last year!   He is the student representative on the Seward School Board and involved in both the local Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) as a loyal member and leader of the group and involved in National Honor Society as well, as one of the class leaders!

Evan is a member of the SHS Speech team-in the area of Extemporaneous Speaking and is a member of the SHS Choir and has been a member of the Select Choir, Honor Choir, Swing Choir and Musical!  He has been a member of the band and participated in a variety of musical presentations.  He has faithfully represented SHS at the annual Nebraska State Fair Education Division competitions and won numerous awards and recognitions in their various educational contests and events.

Evan is the leader and team captain for the SHS Academic Decathlon Team and also the captain of the very successful SHS Quiz Bowl team-helping to win a variety of Championships for the SHS Quiz Bowl program.  He has been recognized time and again for his outstanding Math skills at UNL and the Doane College Math Day contests and is one of the academic leaders at Seward High!

He is a loyal and dedicated member of St. John Lutheran Church and participated in the various youth programs and activities with his church and youth group!   He is a member of the St. John Youth God Parent program, assisting the congregation in a variety of avenues of service and leadership.

His work experience outside of the school includes working for Premier Detasseling of Seward-and is proud of having perfect attendance for three years in the fields!!  He also mows lawns and works at a variety of athletic events!

In the area of “Service Above Self,” Evan has gathered almost 100 hours of community service while in high school through his involvement with younger athletes at the various youth camps for track and cross country and basketball!  He is extremely involved in service at his church and Lutheran school and participates in a host of volunteer efforts to assist others through his school organizations as well! 

Evan plans for college are presently undecided, as is his major.  He was presented a book scholarship from the Seward Rotary Club and Rotary mementos and information and a Rotary Club banner!  He will now be considered a finalist for the Seward Rotary Youth Rotarian of the Year to be announced at Honors Night in May.  The Seward Rotary Club recognizes one Youth Rotarian a Month and applications are available from the SHS Counselor’s office.
