Seward Freshman Team Captures State NE AMI Middle School /Freshman Quiz Bowl Championship

The SHS Freshmen Quiz Bowl Team A captured the State NE AMI Middle School/Freshman Quiz Bowl Championship at the recent Freshman Quiz Bowl on Wednesday, Nov. 9th in an all day Quiz Bowl Tourney at the Seward Civic Center.   There were 50 teams and 30 schools represented at the tourney from across Nebraska.  The Championship Freshmen defeated two Norris teams, a Ralston team and a Gretna team to win the Championship.  Team members included SHS Freshmen Jared Harris-Captain, Austin Drobrusky, Andrew Gokie, Wade Slepicka, and Nolan Whitney.  The Freshman Girl’s Team enjoyed a strong showing as well and included Madalyn Lobmeyer-Captain, Brie Johnson, Emily Lintt, MacKynna Gross, Camryn Jensen, Emily O’Kief and Alexis Hiser.  Clark Kolterman serves as the team coach/sponsor.  The Seward Teams are sponsored by the School District of Seward High Ability Learner Program (HAL).

 

The annual Middle School/Freshman State AMI (Nebraska American Mother’s Inc. /Nebraska Mother’s Club) Quiz Bowl was held throughout the entire Civic Center in Seward on Nov. 9th, 2016 to encourage youth to work together in a knowledge building process-through a team effort-quiz bowl.  The contest was a general knowledge quiz bowl-featuring a “round robin” event in the morning and a single elimination tourney in the afternoon. Middle School and High School Freshmen Teams from across the state competed in the all-day event.

 

There were three tournaments featured in the Quiz Bowl event-a Small Middle School tourney, a Large Middle School tourney and a Freshmen Tournament.  The top two teams in each tournament won trophies and the wining team received individual medals for their team members as well. 

 

Capturing first in the Small Middle School tourney was Pender High A Team, followed by St. Joseph Middle School in Lincoln with Second, Pender B placed Third and Howells/Dodge placed Fourth.  In the Large Middle School tourney, placing First was Norris Middle School Team A, and Second place was awarded to Gretna MS Team A, with Milford MS placing third and Gretna Team B placing Fourth.  The Seward High Freshman captured the Championship in the Freshman Tourney, with Norris Freshman Team A placing Second, Norris Team B placing third and Ralston placing Fourth.

 

Volunteer readers for the contest included Sue Imig, Pat Ohlmann, Bonnie Kruse and Myrna Swanson all of Seward, Joyce Stevens and Mary Ann Wortman of Crofton, Lanae Tryon of Omaha, Donna Lefter of Exeter, Nancy Meyer of Geneva, Shelia Monke of Arlington and Sue Venteicher of ????.  The SHS volunteers for the Quiz Bowl included Kiernan Baker, Jack Yelden, Brady Smith, Garrett Kuss, Alex Sackschewsky, Ryan Wall, Clarke Chandler, Wyatt Shafer, Quentin Chesterfield, Jacob Spidel, Ben Myers, Parker Stroup, Sam Briggs and Savannah Baldesono.  Charles Gebhardt served as the Quiz Master for the tourney and was assisted by Clark Kolterman.  Jean Kolterman served as the local NAMI Project Chairman. 

 

Schools participating included Norris, Wilber/Clatonia, Utica Centennial, Seward, Gretna, Crete, Norris, Thayer Central, Milford, Kearney Catholic, Cross County, Wahoo, Sandy Creek, McCool Junction, Howells-Dodge, Fillmore Central , St. Joseph of Lincoln, Friend, Heartland of Henderson, St. John of Seward, Our Redeemer of Staplehurst, Pender, Hampton, Fullerton, Hampton, Shelby/Rising City, Columbus  and Osceola.
