SHS Students Compete at State Speech

Three students from the Seward High Speech Team qualified for the NSAA State Speech Contest in Kearney on Thursday, March 22, 2017.  The students competing included Seward High senior Nana Abenaa Wright in Duet with Junior Kenna Gottschalk, Nana Abenaa Wright in also qualified in Poetry and senior Evan Mettenbrink  qualified for State Speech in Extemporaneous Speaking.

Wright and Gottschalk received first place in both preliminary rounds and qualified for the finals in Duet with a cutting from “The Help” by Kathryn Stockett.  They competed and were selected Fifth Place over all, with three Superior ratings.  Each girl received a state Fifth Place medal and were honored at the closing awards ceremony for all the awardees and participants.  Nana Abenaa Wright also received two Superior ratings in Poetry but did not qualify for finals and Evan Mettenbrink competed in two preliminary rounds of Extemporaneous Speaking, received Superior Ratings but did not qualify for finals.

The students were coached by Seward High Instructor Clark Kolterman.
