Seward High Quiz Bowl Team Captures Central Conference Championship for 2017!

With nine of the ten schools participating, the Seward High Quiz Bowl Varsity Team A won the Central Conference Championship again this year at the annual Central Conference Quiz Bowl Tourney at the Seward Civic Center in Seward on Wednesday, April 12 in an all-day tourney.  Members of the Championship team were Evan Mettenbrink-Captain, Kevin Lyon-Co-Captain, Ryan Wall, Evan Nottingham, and Chris Galusha.  Members of the SHS Varsity Quiz Bowl Team-Blue, who also competed included Nolan Homp-Captain, Jake Marshall, Riley Pollock, Josh Sherman and Grace Orwen!  Both teams are coached by Clark Kolterman. 

Teams receiving trophies and placing in the tourney were Seward High Varsity Team A-Championship-coached by Clark Kolterman, York High Team A-Second Place-coached by Dennis Haack, , Grand Island Northwest High Team A-Third-coached by George Mohr and Adams Central High –Fourth Place-coached by Joshua Lewis. 

The teams played four matches in the morning to vie for seeding for the afternoon tourney based on wins, losses and points generated. 

After the morning rounds, the SHS Team A was the number one seed and SHS Team B was the ninth seed of 18 teams.  The SHS Team B lost to Holdrege and then the SHS Varsity Team A defeated Grand Island Northwest, Holdrege, Adams Central and concluded with a win over York Team A!  The SHS Team A was undefeated all day and captured the Central Conference Quiz Bowl Trophy and Central Conference First Place medals. 

The tournament featured rounds of 15 minutes in the morning and 20 minutes in the afternoon, with 80 possible questions directed to the teams on general knowledge on math, science, literature, grammar and history.  Volunteer readers /judges for the tourney included Sue Imig and Pat Ohlmann of Seward and Stan and Nancy Meyer of Geneva.  Charles Gebhardt, SHS instructor, served as the Quiz Master and coordinated the setup of the round robin matches in the morning and seedings in the afternoon

Volunteer time keepers and scorers included Chase Prochnow, Jack Yelden, Jarod Harris, Kiernan Baker, Clint Koetter, Jayden Germer, Morgan Kavuelk, Jax Johnson, Madalyn Lobmeyer and David Clark.

The Seward High Quiz Bowl program is sponsored and funded by the School District of Seward High Ability Learner Program (HAL).

The teams represented included two high school teams from Crete, York, Aurora, Adams Central, Central City, Schuyler, Holdrege, Grand Island Northwest and Seward.  Not participating was Columbus Lakeview High School.
