SHS English 12 Visit NE National Guard Museum on POW Day

After studying the novel, “A Few Survivied” by the late Bob Dowding of Seward, who was a WWII prisoner of war in the Philippines for almost four years.  Dowding returned to Seward and wrote his novel on his POW experiences when he was 80 years old.  The students read the novel and visited the museum during the POW Recognition week, to reflect on Dowding’s novel, his experiences and other POW’s from the greater Seward area, including the late Dale Carr, Norman Weiler, Hal Cummins and Wendell Rivers.

A special local POW exhibit was featured at the museum, along with a host of artifacts from the local POW survivors.  The entire presentation was coordinated by the Ne National Guard Director Gerald Meyer, who spoke on the novel, Dowding and the other WWII POW’s from Seward.  Dr. and Mrs Jack Duensing also spoke and reflected on their friend and longtime neighbor, Bob Dowding.

The students also enjoyed a tour of the museum and explored the various aspects of the new educational facility.

The Dowding novel is available on loan from the Seward Memorial Library or can be purchased at Chapter’s Books and Gifts in Seward.
