Greta Hughes Named Youth Rotarian of the Month

SHS Senior, Greta Hughes was selected the Youth Rotarian of the Month at Seward High and is the daughter of Tim and Rita Hughes of rural Seward.  She was honored and recognized at the monthly Seward Rotary Club meeting at noon at the Jones National Bank and Trust in Seward.  She was introduced and presented Rotary mementos, materials and a Seward Rotary banner. She was given a book scholarship and is now in competition for the Seward Rotary Club Youth Rotarian of the Year Scholarship.

Greta plays the Oboe and is a four year member of Marching Band, Symphonic Band, is the Mellophone Section Leader and participated in UNL’s Oboe Reed Day, as well as the Concordia Musical Arts Day.

She is a three year member of the SHS Speech Team-named a Central Conference medalist and District Champion with the SHS Drama Team/OID.  She is a State Qualifier with their SHS Oral Interpretation of Drama team.  She was one of two named this year to the NSAA Academic All State in the area of Speech.  She also was awarded and recognized as the SHS High School leader in the area of Leadership by the Nebraska Elks Lodge.

Great participated in the SHS Poetry Out Loud Program and the VFW Voice of Democracy Speech contest as well.  She has be a loyal member of the One Acts program at SHS for four years and participated in their competition piece this year.

She is a two year member/leader of the SHS Student Council.  She is a four year leader/officer in the local Skills USA Chapter-serving as President of the SHS Opening and Closing teams-and was a State Medalist winner for Skills USA.   She was a member of the SHS Skills USA Quiz Bowl team that placed Third Nationally this last year at the Skills USA National Conference contest in Louisville, KY.

She is a member of the SHS FBLA and SHS Key Club as well.  Greta has been involved with the SHS award winning quiz bowl teams over her high school career.  She was the first SHS Fine Arts Student of the Month this year and received numerous PRIDE awards.

Greta is a leader in the SHS National Honor Society and always on the SHS Honor Roll.

 She has competed in and is also a leader in the SHS delegation to the Education Division Contests at the State Fair.  She has served as an SHS Outdoor Educational counselor and worked with students as a counselor/volunteer at Camp Luther His Kids Special Education project.

She is a member of the Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and is considered a youth leader and one of the strong voices of youth in her congregation. 

Her area of “Service Above Self” is in the area of assisting Special Education students in a variety of settings, especially at Camp Luther’s His Kids Special Education project. 

She plans on a major in Special Education and plans to attend UNL in the fall.

Greta will be honored again at the annual Spring Honors Night and presented her book scholarship from Rotary.  A student is selected monthly by the Seward Rotary Club during the school year.  Entry forms can be found on line or at the counselor’s office at the high school or from Mr. Kolterman in Room 116.
