Last Quiz Bowl of the Season Caps Successful Year-Seward Participates at annual “Brain Brawl!”

The last Quiz Bowl of the Season was held at Lincoln Northeast High School on Saturday, April 28 with an all-day event for Eighth Graders and High School Freshman and Seward took two teams in each division.  This is the annual Lincoln Northeast “Brain Brawl,” sponsored for over two decades by their schools quiz bowl program..  The event featured a “Round Robin” event in the morning with a General Knowledge Quiz contest between schools.  The schools were then “seeded” in the afternoon single elimination tourney, based on wins and losses in the morning event.  Each Middle School team played three rounds in the morning and each freshman team played four rounds in the morning.

In the morning, Freshman A played Central Catholic, Creighton Prep, Lincoln SW and Seward B. The Freshman Seward B team played Creighton Prep, Waverly B, Waverly A and Seward A.  The Middle School team A played St. Joseph, Logan BPS, and Lux and Seward Middle School Team B played Schoo, Waverly and Logan BPS.

“Our teams really had some very close rounds in the morning and often came back from behind to save a win!” stated Coach Clark Kolterman.  “I was proud of all of our teams, as there are some very strong teams in this tourney and we held our own many times in the day’s tourney plays. It looks liked SHS will have a strong, well rounded quiz bowl program in the future with the talent on our bus today at Northeast!  I wish them the best of luck!”  

Following the morning play, the Seward Freshman A team was seeded 5^thand the Seward Freshman team B was seeded 8^th.  Both teams lost in their first round of the final tourney of the day.  The Seward Middle School team A was the 13^thseed in the afternoon tourney and the Seward Middle School team B was the 10^thseed.  Team A was defeated in the first round but Team B defeated Logan MS and then lost to Buffet A.  Creighton Prep won the Freshman Tourney and Irving won the Middle School Tourney.  

Members of the SHS Freshman Teams included Team A- Mason Larson, Ross Brown and Isaiah Van Beck. SHS Freshman Team B included Aston Conner, Braden Adams and Andrew Alley.  Seward Middle School Team A included Emily Yelden, Wen Krahulik, Ella Gray, Jack Wall and Nathan Hochstein. Seward Middle School Team B included Nathan Nottingham, Blake Austin, Jacob Mueller, Maddie Viger, and Lauryn Parra.

Participating schools included Creighton Prep, Beverage, Buffet, Irving, Logan, Lux, Mickle, Moore, OCA, Schoo, Seward, St. Joseph, Waverly, Lincoln SW, Cornerstone Christain, and Lincoln NE, with many school bringing as many as four team per divison.

The teams were sponsored and coached by Clark Kolterman.  Greg Miller serves as the coach for the Seward Middle School team and Kolterman coaches the Seward High team.  The teams are sponsored by the School District of Seward High Ability Learner Program (HAL).  Seward has participated in this “Brain Brawl” Lincoln Northeast Quiz Bowl for all 21 years of the program!  All four teams were invited to participate in the State Fair Quiz Bowl contest this August!
