Lena Hughes is the Seward Youth Rotarian of the Month

The Seward Rotary Club honored Lena Hughes as the Seward Youth Rotarian of the Month. She is the daughter of Jana and John Hughes of Seward and was introduced and recognized for her many leadership roles at Seward High and in the community.  She was presented a Rotary Banner, mementos and a Rotary book scholarship.

Lena is a leader at SHS academically.  She is always on the SHS Honor Roll and a leader in the local, SHS National Honor Society.  She has been selected an SHS Student of the Month, and received numerous PRIDE Awards from the faculty and administration. 

Lena is also a leader in the SHS Athletic Program, as she has been part of the SHS Basketball team, and a four year member and leader with the very successful SHS Volleyball team. She has been recognized for her athletic/academic skills at the Central Conference and NSAA District levels.  She has also been involved in a variety of Advanced Placement classes at SHS.

Lena is a member of Skills USA, participating at the state level competitions all four years.  She is also involved in the SHS Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and participated at the state level in a host of contests over the years.  She is also an SHS Ambassador and very involved with the Junior Jays Mentoring program.

Lena is a musician, plays the piano and has been a leader in the SHS Vocal Music department. She is considered a leader in the SHS Swing Choir, having been part of the group all four years of her high school career.  She is also a longtime member of the SHS Honor Choir, and participated in all of the SHS musicals, with major roles, all four years as well.  She has also participated in the annual Seward Concordia University’s Musical Arts Day.

She participated in the Evening of One Acts this year, and also was involved in the Seward VFW “Voice of Democracy” Speech contest.

In the community, Lena has been a longtime leader in her 4-H Club and involved in a spectrum of activities’ with her local club, as well as at the county and district level.  

She has been employed as a detasseler and worked in the fields, was a Safety Data Assistant for Hughes Brothers, INC, worked as the Manager Assistant for Tasteful Indulgence and currently is a Certified Nurse Assistant (CAN) at the Ridgewood Long-term Care Facility in Seward.

Lena attends Our Savior Lutheran Church in Lincoln and participates in the Godparent program at St. John Lutheran Church in Seward and is considered one of the voices of youth in her congregations.  She attended the Lutheran Church’s National Youth Gathering.  She is a longtime Vacation Bible School teacher at St. Johns, and assists with the St. John Summer Horizon program as well. 

Her area of “Service Above Self” really is through her volunteer hours with her local 4-H program, as she has dedicated many hours of volunteer efforts to assist her local 4-H club with a host of volunteer activities over the span of ten+ years! She has also been involved with the service projects of both the SHS FBLA and Skills USA as well.

She plans to attend the University of Iowa next year and study in the area of Nursing.

Lena is now a finalist for the “Youth Rotarian of the Year” and will be honored again in May at the Seward High Honors Night.  The Seward Youth Rotarian is selected and honored monthly, during the school year, honoring a student each month. Contact the SHS Counselor’s office for an application.
