Three SHS Student’s Essays Win Local Contests and Qualify for the State Optimist Essay Contest

Three SHS Seniors, Cordell Vrbka, Madalyn Lobmeyer and Garrett Erickson were all notified that their essays will be entered in the State 2020 Optimist Club Essay Contest.  The students each entered the essay contest and were selected winners and will represent area Optimist Clubs in the State Optimist Essay Contest by area Optimist Clubs.

First Place Essay and representing the Seward Optimist Club is Madalyn Lobmeyer.  She is the daughter of Jonathan and Amy Lobmeyer of Seward. She plans to attend the University of Nebraska this fall.  First Place Essay and representing the Lincoln Evening Optimist Club is Cordell Vrbka of Malcolm, who it the son of John and Becky Vrbka of Malcolm and he plans to attend the University of Nebraska this fall. Also First Place in the Lincoln West Optimist Club essay contest was Garrett Erickson, the son of Scott and Brenda Erickson of Seward.  Garrett plans to attend Doane University this fall.  All three essays qualified for the State Contest sponsored by the Nebraska Optimist Club.  Lana Urban, with the Seward Optimist Club, is the 2020 State Optimist Essay Contest.  Each student will read their essay at the local Seward Optimist Club meeting in the future.

The students each wrote a 750 word essay on the topic “Is Optimism the Key to Achieving the Dreams you iMagine?”  The students each prepared their paper and will now have it read by the judge’s at the State Level. There are 18 state finalists in the Nebraska contest.   

The three winners will be recognized at an approaching Seward Optimist Club meeting. The Seward Optimist Club presented each student a certificate and medal, honoring each as the First Place representative in the Nebraska Optimist Essay Contest, qualifying each to be named a State Finalist and the right to compete at the 2020 Nebraska Optimist Club Essay Contest.  First place award for the Nebraska State Optimist Essay is $2500.  

The local Seward High liaison with the Seward Optimist Club essay contest is Melissa Pohl, SHS English teacher.  Clark Kolterman serves as the local Seward Optimist Club Essay Chair.
