Plum Creek Literacy Festival

The Plum Creek Literacy Festival is a wonderful experience for the students at Seward Elementary. Every year Concordia University, with the generous donations from local merchants, banks, and donors bring amazing authors and illustrators to our school.  Students (and teachers) usually sit in awe that these celebrities are standing in the flesh, in our school! We hear cool stories about how the authors write their books, their experiences, they share bits and pieces of their lives with us, and if we are lucky we get new artwork to display in our library.  This year is no different! We get to welcome Denise Fleming and Eric Litwin to our school.  We couldn't be more excited! The information below was copied from The Plum Creek Literacy Festival's website.

Denise was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio, frequenting the library where today the Children’s Room is designed around her books. She attended Saturday art classes, enjoying the galleries and the creative process. Her first book, ‘In the Tall, Tall Grass’ was published after years of working as a freelance artist. Many of her books are about nature, as she loves to observe wildlife and has intentionally planned her backyard to accommodate all sorts of creatures. Her book ‘In the Small, Small Pond’ won a Caldecott Honor award. She writes, “I can’t imagine not making books. Every time I put words and pictures together to make a book it seems like magic. I feel very lucky to be able to make a living doing something that is so satisfying.”
