Theo Hughes is honored as the March Youth Rotarian of the Month by Seward Rotary

The Seward Rotary Club honored SHS Senior Theo Hughes at the March 11, 2020 Seward Rotary Club meeting at noon at the Jones Bank auditorium.  Theo was introduced to the local Seward Rotary Club by Rotarian Matt Dominy.  Theo is the son of Ted and Lynda Hughes of Seward.

Theo is first and foremost an Honor Student at Seward High, with a GPA of 4.0.  He is a leader/member of the SHS National Honor Society and always on the SHS Honor Roll.  He has taken many Advance Placement (AP) Classes at SHS, and is currently enrolled in Calculus II at Concordia University in Seward.  Theo has been awarded many P.R.I.D.E. Awards –nominated by his teachers for his leadership and effort.  

Theo is also a dedicated athlete at SHS, participating and serving as a leader with the SHS Basketball and Baseball teams, both since his freshman year-all four years at SHS.  He was the center on the SHS Basketball team this year and is a Varsity Letterman.   He has been very involved with the various basketball and baseball camps sponsored by SHS over the last four years.  In the SHS Baseball program, Theo currently enjoys the positon of Varsity Pitcher and in the Outfield and is a Varsity Letterman.  He also played Legion Baseball both in 2017 and 2018.  

He is a very active volunteer leader, involved with the various SHS Service groups.  He is a four year member of the SHS SkillsUSA organization, participating in the 2017 and 2018 state SkillsUSA Conferences.  He competed in technical drafting on the State SkillsUSA level.

Theo participated in the local VFW Voice of Democracy Speech contest and the various activities and contests with the Nebraska State Fair Education Division.  He participated in the various contests with the Nebraska State Fair Education Division his sophomore year.

Theo is a very active, lead member of the local, SHS Future Business Leaders of America Chapter (FBLA). Theo supported the local FBLA Christmas Gift program for underprivileged children and was one of the top Watkin’s products salesman of the year for the club.  He also competed in the FBLA competitions and was a member of the 2018 Stock Market game. 

Theo is involved in the SHS Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), meeting Mondays, to discuss faith and how it relates to sports.  He is an active member of the St. John Godparent youth program and a voice of youth at St. John Lutheran Church in Seward.

Theo has worked at Hughes Brothers in Seward since 2017.  He have various duties organizing blueprints, printing blueprints and various duties throughout the office.

He has been very involved the local Summer Horizons program at St. John each summer, working with youth in the “Dare to be Dangerous” activity for three years and teaching “Design Challenge” for a year.  He has over 60 hours of community service and volunteer hours with the program.

His hobbies include skiing, both snow and water skiing, and traveling with his family which involves great family vacations.

His “Service Above Self” community volunteer activities include the various community service projects through SkillsUSA and FBLA at SHS.  He also has been one of the youth leaders assisting with the Seward children’s (age 3rdto 8th Grade) Basketball Camp/Program-earning 32 hours of community service over the last four years.  

Theo’s college plans are presently undecided, however he wants to pursue a career in Business Management and eventually hopes to return and work at Hughes Brothers in Seward.  

Theo was presented with a packet of information on Rotary and awarded a Rotary Book Scholarship.  He is now a finalist for the Rotary Club’s annual Youth Rotarian of the Year scholarship-announced at the annual SHS Honors Night in May.  The Seward Rotary honors one student a month as the Seward Youth Rotarian of the Month, with applications available from the SHS Counseling office at SHS.
