“Girl’s Only” Quiz Bowl Sponsored by GFWC NFWC Successful in 2021-At Capacity-Sold Out!

The 18th annual GFWC NFWC “Girl’s Only” Quiz Bowl was again held at the Seward Civic Center on Wednesday, October 6th, 2021 in an all day, general knowledge quiz bowl featuring 41 high school teams from across Nebraska.  The event was chaired by GFWC NFWC representative Jean Kolterman and hosted by members of the GFWC Seward Woman’s Club.

Two teams from Seward High participated in the Girl’s Only Quiz Bowl, coached by SHS educator, Melissa Pohl.  Attending and participating Grace Roberts, Elianah Wunderlich, Julya Metschke, Abigayil Wunderlich, Ella Gray, Maddie Viger, Abby Moore, Marisa Schmeckpeper.   They competed in the Large School Division and were sponsored by the GFWC Seward Woman’s Club, the GFWC Seward Junior Women’s Club and the HAL (High Ability Learner) program from the School District of Seward.

The competitive day featured a morning “Round Robin” contest, with each team playing at least three rounds of questioning and recording the best scores, high scores and most wins to assist in determining  the seeding of the teams for the afternoon single elimination tourney.  There were three tourneys at the contest-Small, Medium and Large Schools were divided to compete at the individual size levels.   The top teams were awarded trophies and individual medal, second place each won a trophy and there was also a consolation round.

Winners included……

Small School:  First Place was awarded to Shelton High-coached by Casey Petersen, Second Place was presented to Shelby Rising City High-coached by Sarah Hernbloom, Third Place was awarded to Howells Dodge High coached by Traci Sindelar, and Fourth Place was presented to Hampton High coached by Gary Richards.

Medium School:  Milford High was awarded First Place –coached by Jacob Leuenberger,  Second Place was awarded to Cross County-coached by Joanna Nielsen, Third Place was presented by Central City A coached by Brandon Wright, and Fourth went to Centennial High coached by Rebecca Pair.

Large School-Elkhorn South won the First Place Award in the Large School Division –coached by Molly Erickson, Gretna A High Team was named Second Place-coached by Rick Arch, Third Place went to Norris B coached by Sam Applegate and Fourth Place was awarded to Norris High Team B also coached by Sam Applegate.

There were seven rooms of competition happening at once, issuing 40 toss up and 40 bonus questions during each round.  Volunteer readers and judges for the contest included Joanna Treas, Sue Imig, Melissa Pohl, Pat Ohlmann, Dr. Louis Reith, Clark Kolterman –all of Seward, Kathy Wilcox of Crete and Jenni Erhart and Debbie Anderson of Osceola.  The timers and score keepers were coaches of the teams and Riley Nuttleman served as the Quiz Master for the tourney, and Clark Kolterman assisted with details for the tourney.

A pizza luncheon was hosted by members of the GFWC Seward Woman’s Club at noon for the readers, coaches and bus drivers.  

The excess funds from this project assists in funding the projects of the GFWC NFWC Fine Arts projects, such as the GFWC NFWC printed Anthology and the Girl’s Only Writing Workshop.

There were 41 teams participating in the contest this year from schools including Seward High, York High, Norris High, Elkhorn South High, Elkhorn North High, Centennial High, Milford High, Central City High, Shelton High, Shelby Rising City, Howells Dodge, Hampton, Gretna High, Ralston High, Friend High, Exeter Milligan High, McCool Junction High, Dorchester, Sandy Creek High, Bennington, Oakland Craig High, Kearney Catholic High School, West Point Beemer High, Fillmore Central High, Cross County High, Fullerton High, Heartland High and East Butler High.
