Three students at Seward High, Hailey Brown, Austin Van Velson and Jose Roca, were selected for the annual Rotary District Leadership Institute-“Rotary Youth Leadership Award” (RYLA) and will be representing the school at the gathering on April 11 through the 13th at Camp Kitaki near Louisville, NE.Brown and Van Velson are SHS Juniors and Roca is an exchange student at SHS from Bolivia.

The students are funded through the Seward Rotary Club and will attend at no expense to themselves.

Students are required to be juniors in high school or exchange students, so that they can experience various leadership opportunities and return and share them with their school. They will focus on critical thinking, learn how to coordinate and develop leadership skills and community service projects, discuss good governance, learn to think globally, explore new career paths and meet and exchange ideas with various Rotary leaders across the Rotary District 5650.

The students each were required to make a written application and go through a personal interview process with local members of the Seward Rotary Club to be selected for the honor. This is a national program of Rotary International and the Seward Club has been involved in the program since it’s inception.Local Seward Rotary President Jim Pink, serves as the co-chair for the District RYLA program.

Members on the local interview panel included Seward Rotarians Clark Kolterman, Mike Meyer, Jane Rehmer, Jim Pink and Vance Winter. Also assisting in the process was CU senior Andrew Keseman.
