Seward Rotary Club Honors Megan Hamling as the April Youth Rotarian of the Month

The Seward Rotary Club honored Seward High Senior, Megan Hamling with the monthly Seward Youth Rotarian of the Month award at their weekly noon luncheon meeting on Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at the Seward Civic Center by Rotarian Clark Kolterman.She is the daughter of Lyle and Lori Hamling of Garland.She was introduced and honored by the club, presented with some mementos from the Seward Club,given a book scholarship and is a finalist for the annual Seward Rotary “Service Above Self” scholarship.

Megan has been a member of the SHS Colorguard and Winterguard.She is a four year member of the SHS FFA and a two year FFA officer.She was a FFA LSE District winner, two years in a row, placing Fourth in Public Speaking at the FFA Convention-winning a gold medal.She has also been an involved FCCLA member, active in Key Club and was also an FBLA member while in high school.

Megan played softball for SHS for four years and is a letterman.

She has been involved with the SHS Concert Choir and participated in the SHS musicals.

Megan has always been a member of the SHS Honor Roll every term of her high school career and a leader and a three year member of the SHS National Honor Society.She was honored by being selected the SHS Student of the Month.

Megan was selected by interview and participated in the Rotary District RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award) leadership program, representing SHS and sponsored by the Seward Rotary Club.

She is an active member of St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church, an active leader of the St. Vincent DePaul Godparent program and a active volunteer and voice of the youth in the congregation.

She has been a member of 4-H for ten years, and involved in the 4-H Junior Leaders, 4-H Council and the 4-H Foundation for Seward County.She has been the president of two 4-H Clubs-the Shooting Stars 4-H Club and the Seward County Junior Leaders.She has been involved with the Seward County Fair for many years.

Megan is employed as a childcare provider, worked in the fields for Pioneer for two summers and also employed as a cashier at Pac and Save in Seward.

Her “Service Above Self” contributions include working with the area cemeteries, in the area “Adopt-A-Cemetery” program, volunteering to assist in their upkeep and repair.She has also been a community service leader with her various club work and readily volunteers with a variety of projects to serve the homeless, the food pantry and 4-H Camp, as a counselor.Megan also has been a counselor at the church youth camp called SKY Camp.She often reaches out to other youth, as a mentor and offering guidance and advice to those in need.Her volunteer service and work with her church also give her another level of satisfaction as a leader.She is proud to be a team leader for the Seward County Relay for Life campaign.

Her plans after SHS include attending the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and plans to study on the East Campus in some area of Ag Marketing or Ag Promotion.

The Seward Rotary Club honors one senior each month with the Seward Youth Rotarian Award.Nomination forms are available at the SHS Counselor’s office lobby.They present the award every month that school is in session.The students will all be recognized and honored at the SHS Honors Night in May and one student will be awarded the annual Seward Rotary Club’s “Service Above Self” Scholarship.
