SHS Students Capture State Sweepstakes Championship in Education Division at the 2016 NE State Fair

Seward High students successfully captured the State Fair High School Sweepstake Championship trophy again this year at the 2016 Nebraska State Fair-based on entries and rankings in the competitions.  The SHS High School students competed in many of the contests sponsored by the State Fair Education Division at the 2016 Nebraska State Fair-claiming 12 First Place Championships and numerous additional places and recognitions in the various educational competitions.  The competed during the first week end of the State Fair in Grand Island, August 27 and 28-both on stage and in testing situations. 

They won first place awards in HS Essay-Grade 11-12 Ben Galusha, HS Short Story-Montana Hill, HS Poetry Grade 11-12 Kaitlynn Smith, HS Poetry Recitation-Grade 9-12 Thomas Bosmeniel, HS Penmanship Grade 9-10 Serena Mc Bride, HS Penmanship Grade 11-12 Kenna Michaelson, HS Social Studies Grade 11-12 Evan Mettenbrink, HS Science Grade 11-12 Evan Mettenbrink, HS Cup Stacking Stacy Damanhoury, HS Shakespeare Monologue Thomas Bosmeniel, HS Community Service-SHS FCCLA Recycling Day, and the HS Freshman Quiz Bowl Team-Jarod Harris, Andrew Gokie, Austin Dobrusky.

Winners from SHS in the various divisions included, HS Poetry GR 9-10 Mark Myers-2, Natasha  Block-3, Melania Kroft-4, Clint Koetter-5, Chris Galusha-6, Sage Hans-7, Jacee Wiesen-8, Malia Rolf-9 and Isabella Sermeno-10, plus a host of Honorable Mentions from SHS!  In Poetry GR 11-12 the results included Kaitlynn Smith-1, Guadalupe Rios-2, Chauntel Stueck-3, Shaylea Nuttleman-4, Brock Maloy-5, Kenna Michaelson-6, Alexa Bruick-7, Dylan Duer-8, Natasha Ehlers-9, Zoie Benedict-10 and many Honorable Mention awardees. 

In the annual Penmanship contest the students were required to copy a page from “A Lantern In Her Hand” by Bess Streeter Aldrich in cursive writing.  Winners from SHS included GR 9-10 Serena McBride-1, Olivia Reinhert-2, Kenna Gottschalk-3, Kelsie Zadina-6, Arden George-10 and many SHS Honorable Mentions.  In GR 11-12 Penmanship, winners included Kenna Michaelson-1, Alexa Bruick-2, Nana Wright-3, Dylan Duer-5, Will Brown-6, Kailynn Smith-7, Erique Lujan-8, Shiloh Forgerty-9 and Guadelupe Rios-10 plus Honorable Mentions.

The winners at the State Fair in Math included Freshman-Jarod Harris-5th, Freshman Social Students Nolan Whitney-8th, Jarod Harris HM, Freshman Grammar-Jarod Harris 10th, Freshman Science-Jarod Harris-3, Spelling Jarod Harris-6, HS Cup Stacking Stacy Damanhoury-1, Ryan Wall-5, Brody Smith-8. 

In High School Quiz Bowl the SHS Seward Blue Team Place Third overall, in the High School Division, losing in the semi- finals to York by one question!  York went on to defeat Lincoln High in the finals and Seward had defeated Lincoln High earlier in the day!  The SHS Blue Team included Evan Mettinbrink, Nana Wright, Nolan Homp and Wyatt Shafer-all SHS Seniors!  The SHS Gold team included Thomas Bosmeniel, Savannah Baldassano, Chris Galusha and Katryna Rukas, the SHS Seward A Team included Ryan Wall, Garrett Kuss, Brady Smith and Jack Yelden and the SHS Jays Team consisted on Kiernan Baker, Jax Johnson, Caden Moore and Alex Sackschewsky.  All teams played three rounds in the morning and returned to a single elimination in the afternoon.

In the HS Division of Cup Stacking Chris Galusha placed eighth.  The SHS Improvisation Team placed fifth overall and consisted of Nana Wright, Cayden Moore, Bailey Mooney, and Katryna Rukas.   The Shakespeare Monologue contest was won by Thomas Bosmeniel as King Henry the V and he presented his St. Chrispin’s Day Speech.  Nana Wright won second with her presentation as Lady MacBeth in the “Out, Out Damn Spot” scene of MacBeth.

In the poetry recitation contest –students were required to present a poem from Poetry Out Loud’s collection and Thomas Bosmeniel won with his recitation of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.”  Third place was Nana Wright with “Caged Bird,” Bailey Mooney placed Fourth, Mikayla Rudebusch placed Sixth.  In the Impromptu Speaking contest for HS, Thomas Bosmeniel -3rd, Bailey Mooney -4. 

In the High School Short Story contest Grades 11-12 the results included Montana Hill-1, Adam Siebrandt-3, Caleb Martin-5, Sam Gaskins-6, Tanner Medich-7, Ryan Escareno-8, Timofey Nevzorov-9 and Kaitlynn Smith-10.  In the Short Story Grade 9-10 Bailey Mooney placed 5th and 6th  in the contest!

In Math 11-12 Evan Mettenbrink placed Fourth and GR 9-10 Ryan Wall received an Honorable Mention.  In Social Students 11-12 Evan Mettenbrink -1, Kevin Lyon-2,  and in Social Studies GR 9-10 Garrett Kuss-6, Ryan Wall-9, Cayden Moore-HM, Jack Yelden –HM.  In Science GR 9-10 Cloe Austin -9, and Ryan Wall-HM. 

In HS Essay GR 9-10 Evan Nottingham-2, Chris Galusha-4, Clint Koetter-5, Riley Nuttleman-6, Alysa Biggs-9, Sam Lewis-10.  Essay winners in HS GR 11-12 included Ben Galusha -1, Corbin Ruth-2, Jackson Hoins-3, Will Helmer-4, Alexa Bruick-5, Carmen Rea-6, Joseph Overton-7, Kenna Michaelson-8, Adam Siebrandt-9 and Cody Brose-10, along with a host of Honorable Mentions from SHS.

Each student that competed received a free pass to the fair and a free tee shirt, sponsored by the NEBRASKAland Foundation.  The winners received: First Place-$100 Scholarship, plaque and rosette, Second Place-$50 Scholarship, Plaque and rosette, and Third $25 Scholarship, plaque and rosette.  All other winners in the top ten received rosettes and Honorable Mentions received ribbons.

Seward High has captured the High School Sweepstakes trophy the last three years-making this a four peat.  It is based on participation and wins in the various competitions.  It will be announced at the Plum Creek program at SHS in late September. 

Advisors for the week-end included Pam Franck, Kyle Hinkel and Clark Kolterman-all teachers at SHS.
