Matt de la Peña – Author Addresses SHS Student Body For Plum Creek Literacy Festival

An author of six New York Times bestselling young adult novels, Matt de la Peña is very familiar with the creative writing process and addressed the student body of SHS during an all school convocation on September 23 at 8:30 AM, held in conjunction with the SHS Homecoming celebration.   Matt, a Brooklyn, NY resident, teaches creative writing and visits high schools and colleges throughout the country. Matt graduated from the University of the Pacific, where he attended school on a full ride scholarship for basketball. Along with many young adult novels, Matt has also written picture books, most recently, Last Stop on Market Street, which was the winner of the 2016 Newbery medal award.

He shared his life experiences and offered advice to the students regarding life choices and encouraged them to live their dreams!  He also spoke on his writing process and shared his various novel’s themes with the students.  Question and answer session followed the event.

Matt de la Pena was sponsored by the Concordia University Plum Creek Literacy Festival committee at no charge to the SHS student body.  He was introduced by Seward volunteer and committee member for the Plum Creek Children’s Literacy Festival Jana Hughes.
