Evan Mettenbrink Is the May SHS Fine Arts Youth of the Month
Seward High Senior, Evan Mettenbrink is an talented athlete, scholar and outstanding volunteer in the high school-involved in many aspects of the Fine Arts. A leader in Skills USA, Mettenbrink was recently serving as a state officer-State Treasurer and qualifying for national competition four times! He was a Skills USA National Champion in Medical Math last year and State Champion again this year! He also was named the top Skills USA Student in Nebraska –the highest honor of the state organization.
He is the student representative on the Seward School Board and involved in both the local Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) as a loyal member and leader of the group and involved in National Honor Society as well, as one of their group leaders!
Evan is a member of the SHS Speech team-doubled entered on the Speech team in the area of Extemporaneous Speaking and Persuasive Speaking and was a State Qualifier in Speech. He participated in the VFW Speech Contest and was First Runner Up in the State High School Youth Speech Contest for the Sesquicentennial.
He was a member of the SHS Choir and has been a member of the Select Choir, Honor Choir, Swing Choir and Musical! He has been a member of the band and participated in a variety of musical presentations.
He has faithfully represented SHS at the annual Nebraska State Fair Education Division competitions and won numerous awards and recognitions in their various educational contests and events-placing first in both the Science and Social Studies tests this year-assisting SHS in claiming the State Fair High School Sweepstakes award!
Evan is the leader and team captain for the SHS Academic Decathlon Team and also the captain of the very successful SHS Quiz Bowl team-helping to win a variety of Championships for the SHS Quiz Bowl program-most recently named Central Conference Champions in Quiz Bowl. He has been recognized time and again for his outstanding Math skills at UNL and the Doane University Math Day contests and is obviously one of the academic leaders at Seward High! He has been the recipient of many of the SHS Pride Awards.
He is a loyal and dedicated member of St. John Lutheran Church and participated in the various youth programs and activities with his church and youth group! He is a member of the St. John Youth God Parent program, assisting the congregation in a variety of avenues of service and leadership and a voice of youth in the congregation.
His work experience outside of the school includes working for Premier Detasseling of Seward-and is proud of having perfect attendance for three years in the fields!! He also mows lawns and works at a variety of athletic events!
In the area of “Service Above Self,” Evan has gathered almost 100 hours of community service while in high school through his involvement with younger athletes at the various youth camps for track and cross country and basketball! He is extremely involved in service at his church and Lutheran school and participates in a host of volunteer efforts to assist others through his school organizations as well! He was selected the first Seward Youth Rotarian of the Month, based on his community service to others, scholarship and leadership and recently recognized and honored by the local Seward Rotary Club!
He is the son of Mike and Laurie Mettenbrink of Seward.
