Makena Perdue Named Youth Rotarian of the Month for December

Makena Perdue is Seward Rotary Club Youth Rotarian of the Month for the Month of December.  She is the daughter of Jill and Brad Perdue and honored at the weekly Seward Rotary Club meeting on Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at their noon luncheon.  She was introduced and recognized by Clark Kolterman and presented some Rotary memorabilia and a book scholarship.  She is now a finalist for the Youth Rotarian of the Year award.  She is the daughter of Jill and Brad Perdue of Seward.

Makena is a leader and very involved in the SHS Key Club in Seward, involved in a host of their many community service activities. 

She is also a longtime (four year) member of the SHS Swing/Show Choir and was also a participant in the SHS musicals.  She has participated in the SHS Select Choir and the SHS Concert Choir as well.

Makena has been on the SHS Honor Roll many times and named both Student of the Month and the recipient of many SHS P.R.I.D.E. Awards, and has received the 2017 Academic Achievement award.  She has been involved in a large number of college classes, while at SHS, participating in the local SENCAP program and other classes at SHS and co-sponsored by Southeast Community College.

She participated in local Poetry Out Loud contest and the local VFW Voice of Democracy Speech Contest in Seward.

She participated in the all-day Sophomore Pilgrimage as a tenth grader, visiting the state capitol and representing SHS.  She also participates in the Junior Jays Mentoring Program as well.

Makena is a long time member of the Seward Youth Community Club (SYCC) and been involved in a host of their activities in the community.  She has volunteered at the Seward Recycling Center and various community service endeavors during her high school years.

Makena is a member of the Seward United Methodist Church and a longtime member of their Godparents program.  She sings in the United Methodist Choir, teaches Vacation Bible School every summer and even helped in the painting of the church’s basement two years ago!

She has been employed as a child care provider and presently works at Tasteful Indulgence Cake Shop and at the Seward Dowding Memorial Pool as a lifeguard each summer.  She is also employed presently by the Seward Memorial Heath Care as a dietary aide.

Her area of “Service Above Self” is through her membership in the Seward Youth Community Club and their many community service activities and her work with the local SHS Key Club, as they also host a variety of community service endeavors.  She was also very involved in the recent Rotary Club International Student Exchange, with her family hosting a young girl from France, and serving as a student mentor for the exchange student.

Her long term goal is to study Mortuary Science at Kansas City Kansas Community College and fulfill her dream of becoming a funeral director someday.

She will be recognized again on Honors Day in May at SHS, when the ten students will be again invited to be saluted and the Rotary announces the Youth Rotarian of the Year. 

The Seward Rotary Club nominates one student each month during the school year and recognizes them as the Youth Rotarian of the Month. SHS seniors can apply with an application from their counselor’s office.
