Bosmeniel is February Fine Arts Student of the Month

SHS Senior Thomas Bosmeniel is the February Fine Arts Student of the Month.  He is the son of Anna Downing of Ulysses and Raul Bosmeniel of Lincoln.

He has been very involved with the SHS Speech and Drama program.  He represented NE American Legion District 12 and is sponsored by the Seward American Legion Post #33, and was a State Qualifier/Finalist in the American Legion Speech Contest. He wrote, memorized, and presented his ten minute speech-“The Living Constitution”  and was then required to draw an amendment and speak extemporaneously on the amendment for five minutes.  He presented at their State Conference and was Runner-up in the competition.  He also is a State Finalist in the VFW Voice of Democracy Speech Contest featuring a presentation on the topic “American History-Our Hope for the Future.”

Thomas was the State Oratorical Champion for the Nebraska Optimist Speech contest in 2017 and was named top presenter-qualifying to represent Nebraska at the National Contest in St. Louis.  His speech theme was “What the world gains from optimism.” He also the Poetry Out Loud Seward High representative at the State Contest in 2017 and was named First Runner up at the State Contest in Lincoln at the Sheldon Art Gallery.

Thomas is also a leader in the SHS Drama program, and was in the SHS One Act Play Production programs the last two years, with leads in the program both years.  He was named Outstanding Actor at the Central Ten Conference Contest and District One Act Competitions both years.  He was awarded the NSAA Academic All State Award in the area of Drama for SHS.

He is one of the Captains of the SHS Speech team and double entered in the Drama Team event (OID) and in Serious Prose Literature.  He has also participated in Duet, Extemporaneous Public Speaking, Persuasion, and Poetry.

He is the FFA District Champion in Cooperative speaking and a state finalist in the FFA speech program for the last two years on the topic “The Cooperative Way.” He will compete at the State FFA Speech contest this spring.

Thomas is one of the leaders in the local Skills USA Chapter.  He is also competing this year in the Skills USA Public Address contest on the topic “Champions at Work-Job Ready, Day One!” He was a national finalist last year in the Skills USA Three D Animation contest in Louisville, KY.    He was named Champion speaker at the Mid America Skills USA Conference in Columbus in 2017.

He is a member of the SHS Mixed Choir and participated in the SHS Musicals. He is a member on the award winning Senior Quiz Bowl Team, competing in a host of area tourneys.

He is a member and one of the leaders in the SHS National Honor Society and always on the SHS Honor Roll.   Thomas is the student representative on the Seward School Board and named a Youth Rotarian of the Month in August 2017, SHS Student of the Month and has received numerous PRIDE awards.  Thomas serves as the Vice-President of the Seward High Student Council.

Thomas was the local champion in the Seward Optimist Essay Contest and his essay competed on the State Level last year on the topic “Facing Challenges with Optimism.”  He was selected and attended the American Legion “Boys State” last year, representing SHS, and was one of two selected for the Rotary RYLA leadership program.

He has been very involved with the State Fair Education Division and competed and won a host of the competitions in the Arts at the State Fair.   

Thomas is the “voice” of SHS every morning and makes all of the announcements and morning welcome to the students mornings on the SHS public address system, reminding us “It is a great day to be a Jay!”

He plans to attend the University of Nebraska in Lincoln in the area of Broadcasting.
