Another first semester in the books and another second semester begins. The break gave me some time to have extended conversations with my kids and for purposes of this report, my son. First semester he student taught at a middle school in Omaha and began a new teaching position in the same school earlier this week. Our discussions were a great reminder to me how well behaved, respectful and the high level of education our students receive at SMS. It is truly a great place to learn. Thank you to all the parent who take a vested interest in their child’s education, it truly makes a difference in their success.
Before the Christmas break three different groups at SMS raised then donated money to Blue Valley Community Action to help out local families in need. Those amounts are: Teachers - $300, 8th Grade Students - $136.88, 5th Grade Students - $223.21. The 8th graders also donated 136.88 to the Kiwanis Backpack program here in Seward for a grand total of $796.97. Just another great trait our middle schoolers possess, generosity.
Some Reminders for second semester…
- Have your children check the lost and found regularly if they are missing any items. We empty it when it gets full and donate those items to charity.
- Remind your kids to wear proper clothing to school. We often see
students come to school under dressed in this wintery weather for a variety of reasons but usually because of convenience, style or visibility.
- I appreciate parents who pick up their kids after school following the signs of not double parking or having their child run between cars to quickly hop in their vehicle. This is strictly for the kids safety. If you want to miss the crowd of vehicles wait 5-7 minutes and pick your child up at 3:30 when there is very little traffic.
I have included some upcoming middle school events that you may want to be aware of:
20 January: Grades 5-7 Band Concert at SHS theater, 7 pm start.
24 January: 7/8th Grade School Dance, 7-9 p.m.
25 January: Seward County Spelling Contest at Seward Civic Center
5/6 Grade starts at 10:30 a.m., 7/8 Grade starts at 12:45 p.m.
28 January: Boys Basketball vs Columbus, 7th - away, 8th – home
30 January: 7/8 Boys Basketball at Columbus Lakeview
31 January: 8th Grade Choir at Heartland Festival Honor Choir in Henderson, 7 p.m. concert
Something to think about. How much different would our society be if the daily news reported great people with great stories all through the news cast with a quick report of something serious at the very end, instead of the reverse.
