SEWARD HIGH VARSITY BOWLING BOYS AND GIRLS TEAMS STAR CITY OPEN TOURNAMENT
MARCH 8 & 9, 2008
The Seward High School Bowling Boys and Girls Varsity Teams both competed in the Star City Tournament held at Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln on March 8 & 9. On the opening day of this tournament there were 18 boys teams and 14 girls teams. These teams were from Lincoln schools, McCool Junction, Hastings, York, Plattsmouth, Waverly, Fremont, Lexington and three teams from Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Both the boys and girls teams bowled three regular games followed by five baker games to get a total pin count to decide which teams would advance and continue the competition on March 9. Only the top twelve teams in each Division were eligible to advance to the tournament the next day. Both the Seward boys and girls teams advanced the next day to the bakers round for the best 3 out of 5 games in a double elimination contest. The Seward girls were in 8th place going into the tournament on March 9 with a total pin count of 2251. The Seward boys were in 4th place going into the tournament on March 9 with a total pin count of 3456.
In the Bakers round in the girls division the Seward girls first bowled against Lincoln Southwest and won 3-2. They then bowled the number one team in the tournament, Sioux Falls O’Gorman, and defeated them 3 games to 1 in the Bakers round. Following this they bowled Sioux Falls Washington and lost this round, but then defeated Lincoln High in the next round of bakers 3 games to 2. In the finals they bowled against Sioux Falls Washington and were defeated, but still came in second place in the tournament and the Seward girls team won a scholarship in the amount of $1,000.
In the Bakers round in the boys division the Seward boys first bowled against Sioux Falls Lincoln and won 3 games to 2. They then bowled against Lincoln North Star and won in the first 3 games. Following this they bowled against York and won 3 games to 2. This brought them to the finals round where they defeated Sioux Falls Roosevelt in the first 3 baker games. The boys took first place in this tournament and the Seward boys team won a scholarship in the amount of $1,500.
On an individual basis at this tournament Stan Benes placed 6th in the Singles Event which was a mixed boys and girls scratch division. He also received an individual scholarship for taking 6th place in this individual event.
