Seward Wins First Place in the 2009 Keep Nebraska Beautiful Awards
Receiving Most Recycling Awards of Any Nebraska Community
Seward High School was recognized with the 2009 Award of Excellence in Recycling. The award was presented to the SHS Future Community Career Leader’s of America (FCCLA) vice president Dayna Svoboda. The SHS FFA was also recognized with an Award of Excellence in the category of Youth Group/School Secondary Award for their recycling of large tin cans in the school cafeteria. They recycled 7,799 cans this year at SHS.
The City of Seward won more awards and was recognized more times then any other community in Nebraska at the annual Keep Nebraska Beautiful Conference on Thursday, August 6, 2009 at the Lied Center in Nebraska City. The City of Seward and area Seward groups won a total of five awards at the conference including the First Place 2009 Deanie Anderson Outstanding Community Environmental Award for populations of 2501-10,.000. The award application was prepared by the GFWC Seward Woman’s Club Environmental Chair Jean Kolterman and accepted by GFWC Seward Woman’s Club President, Betty Galen. The awards were presented by Kevin Warneke of Omaha, President of Keep Nebraska Beautiful.
The GFWC Seward Woman’s Club was the runner-up in the category of “Grow Big Read” (pronounced Red), as they have sponsored an annual Tour of Gardens to assist funding the Concordia University’s Plum Creek Children’s Literacy Festival. To date, 84 gardens have been on the tour over 12 years.
The GFWC Seward Woman’s Club was also recognized for an Award of Excellence for their annual pop tab recycling for the Ronald McDonald House, their Arbor Day Event activities and other recycling promotions.
A total of five awards were collected by the Seward delegation at the conference, including Reece Pekarek, VP-SHS FFA, Dayna Svoboda, VP-SHS FCCLA, Betty Galen, GFWC Seward Woman’s Club and Clark Kolterman, teacher at Seward High School and the Seward Arts Council President. Jean Kolterman serves as the Chairman of the Seward Keep Nebraska Beautiful Committee but was unable to attend the conference.
