Bruick, Kuhlman and SHS FFA Place First at 2011 State Fair in Education Division Competitions

Seward High was well represented in the winner’s circle at the 2011 Nebraska State Fair Education Division contests, as the SHS FFA, Zach Bruick and Heather Kuhlman all placed first in their respective competitions.  The education contests were held on August 27 and 28 at the State Fair in Grand Island.  Clark Kolterman and Helen Banzhaf served as the teacher coaches and advisors for the SHS contestants.

The Seward High FFA won the Community Service Award-Group Division, for their recycling and “Keep SHS Beautiful” efforts for the 2010-2011 school  year.  Daniel Buss was awarded second place in the Individual Community Service competition for his volunteer spirit with the Seward Fourth of July Celebration.

Zach Bruick placed first in the Impromptu Speaking contest, presenting a speech on “Nebraska –The Good Life” and Heather Kuhlman won first place with her poem “Flying” centering on the topic “My Favorite Place in Nebraska.  Zach Bruick was also named first runner-up in the Social Studies test on Nebraska.

In the Improvisation Competition, the SHS Improvisation Team I: Micah Moravec, Joey Couch, Brandon O’Dell and Jaclyn Pennington placed 5th and the SHS Improvisation Team II: Megan Seilhan, Allison Leising, Sierra Wignall and Kennedy Sloan placed 6th.  Each team had to develop three improvisations situations.

Jaclyn Pennington was named first runner-up in the Shakespeare Monologue Contest, followed by Micah Moravec 3rd, Brandon O’Dell 5th, Allison Leising 6th and Sierra Wignall Honorable Mention.  Each student was asked to select and memorize a Shakespeare character monologue of 25-60 lines and present it dressed in costume as that character.

Seward’s A Team in the Quiz Bowl contest was named first runner-up, losing in a close final match to Lincoln East High School.  The SHS Quiz Bowl Team A included Joey Couch-Captain, Zach Bruick, Carl Heinicke and Micah Moravec.  SHS Team B consisted of Brandon O’Dell –Captain, Allison Leising, Kennedy Sloan, Sierra Wignall, Nathan Sorsen and Megan Seilhan. 

While Heather Kuhlman captured the first place awards with her poetry on Nebraska in the Student Writing contests, other Seward High winners included in Grades 11 and 12: Devin Koranda-3rd, Jaclyn Pennington-4th, Alyssa Sleight-6th and Honorable Mentions were presented to Matthew St. Louis, Jordan Schmidt, Landon Winfrey, Jordan Mundt and Bryce Van Velson.  In Grades 9 and 10, writing awards were presented to Lauren Shepherd-2nd and Honorable Mentions to Payton Guenther, Kourtney Zadina, Erin Miller, Arianna Bohning and Kennedy Sloan.

On Saturday, August 27th, the SHS Freshman Quiz Bowl team competed at the State Fair.  The Seward High Freshman Quiz Bowl team included Rebecca Couch-Captain, Hailey Brown, Caleb Griger and Kyle Glandt.

Students who placed first and second won plaques, savings bonds-$100 first place and $50 second place, along with rosettes, while students placing third through six received rosettes.  The contest is sponsored by the NEBRASKAland Foundation, Central Platte Natural Resources District and Nebraska State Fair.  The contests are free to enter for all students in grades 3 through 12 and each student that enters is presented with a free ticket to the fair and a tee shirt.
