Seward High Quiz Bowl Team is First Runner-Up at Regional ESU 6 Quiz Bowl Event

The Seward High Quiz Bowl Team placed First Runner-Up at the recent ESU 6 Quiz Bowl Tourney on Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at the Seward Civic Center, to determine the large school representative from the ESU 6 region at the ESU State Quiz Bowl contest to be held at Holdrege.  Thirty two teams vied for the right to represent the region at the State Contest.  The teams competed in a Round Robin tourney in the morning, followed by a single elimination tourney in the afternoon.  ESU representative, Marian Eicher chaired the event.  There were two divisions of the tourney-big school and small school.

Seward High entered two teams in the tourney’s Large School Division. SHS Quiz Bowl Team A members included Zach Bruick, Alyssa Sleight, Micah Moravec, Shane Sloup and Brock Lewis.  SHS Quiz Bowl Team B included members Joey Couch, Brandon O’Dell, Nathan Sorsen, Emily Thrailkill and Seth Lewis.  Clark Kolterman is the coach for both teams.  The teams are sponsored by the School District of Seward High Ability Learner (HAL) program.

In the morning Round Robin event, each team played four games.  SHS Quiz Bowl Team A defeated Malcolm A, Waverly B, Milford A and Wilber-Clatonia A.  SHS Quiz Bowl Team B lost to York A, and Norris B and defeated Fillmore Central B and Malcolm B.

In the afternoon, Seward team B defeated Wilber Clatonia A and then lost to Waverly A by one question to be eliminated.  Seward Team A, was the top ranking team, after the morning Round Robin and defeated Norris Team A in the semi-finals, only to lose to Fillmore Central High and take home the Runner-up trophy.  Centennial High School won the small school division.

Local readers for the contest included Pat Ohlmann, Bonnie Kruse and Tonia Nantkes.  Assisting with the timers were Eric Turner, Trevor Otterstein, Kennedy Sloan, Grant Beckler, Garrett Hallberg, Alex Thompson, Trevor Beckler, Amanda Owens, Sethea Spidell and Ariel Spidell.

Area schools in the event included Norris, Malcolm, Wilber-Clatonia, Waverly, Fillmore Central, Milford, York, Crete, Utica Centennial.
