Seward High Quiz Bowl Teams Capture Central Conference Championship

The Seward High Quiz Bowl Team A captured the Central Conference Quiz Bowl Championship on May 3, 2012 at the Seward Civic Center in an all day tourney.  The morning featured a series of four rounds for each team to “warm-up” for the afternoon single elimination tourney.  The total point generated, along with win and loses, determined the placement or seed of the afternoon tourney.  There were four rooms of competition running throughout the tourney at the Civic Center.

The SHS Team A members included Alyssa Sleight, Micah Moravec, Zach Bruick, Sarah Moody and Carl Heinicke.  The SHS Team B included Brandon O’Dell, Joey Couch, Seth Lewis, Nathan Sorsen and Josh George.  They are coached by Clark Kolterman, SHS instructor.  In the morning, the SHS Team A won all four contests, defeating Schuyler A, York B, Central City and Holdrege B and SHS Team B defeated Crete, Schuyler B and York A, losing to Grand Island Northwest A.  The SHS Team was the number one seed in the afternoon and the SHS Team B was the fifth seed.  The Seward High teams were sponsored and funded by the School District of Seward High Ability Learner Program.

In the afternoon, the SHS Team B defeated Schulyer 100 to 30, they then went on to defeat Fairbury 105 to 50 and finally lost to Seward A 120 to 50.  In the consolation round, they lost a close match to Holdrege A 80 to 75!  The SHS Team A defeated Holdrege B 115 to 55 and then defeated SHS Team B 120 to 50 and finally won over Grand Island Northwest 115 to 50 in the championship match! 

The SHS Team A was named Conference Champion, coached by Clark Kolterman of Seward High.  Grand Island Northwest Team A was coached by Jess Topil, formerly of Seward. Holdrege Team A was name third place and coached by Dan Atchison of Holdrege High and Seward High Team B was named Fourth Place winner, also coached by Clark Kolterman.

SHS Assistant Athletic Director Joel Brase served as the Quiz Master for the tourney.  Volunteers included readers Pat Ohlmann, Todd Pennington, Shawna Williams and Tonia Nantkes.  Scoring and timer volunteers included Sierra Wignall, Micah Moravec, Garrett Hallberg, Grant Beckler, Alex Thompson and Danielle Steele.  Clark Kolterman-Seward teacher and Steve Borer –Seward High AD, assisted in coordinating the tourney activities.

Eight of the ten participating schools competed in the tourney, including York, Central City, Grand Island Northwest, Fairbury, Seward, Schulyer, Holdrege and Crete.  There were 13 schools in the daylong event.
