Emma George Wins Local VFW Speech Contest for 2012
Launch the media gallery 1 playerSHS senior, Emma George of Seward won the local Seward VFW “Voice of Democracy” Speech Contest sponsored by the Seward VFW Post #4755 and the VFW Auxiliary Post #4755. She presented a five minute speech on “Is Our US Constitution Still Relevant?” She competed with and was selected from the 111 entries from Seward High. Dan Kovar, VFW Chair for the VOD speaking, announced the winners at Seward High on November 16th.
First runner-up in the contest was Josh George and Second runner-up was Zach Bruick-all seniors at Seward High. Honorable mentions were awarded to Carl Heinicke, Sierra Wignall, Hannah Moody, Kasey Heath and Joel Ketner. All eight entries will now be sent to the VFW District Contest to compete at the District level. All eight entries will receive cash awards/scholarships at the approaching SHS Senior Honors Night in the Spring. The Seward Post can send one entry to Districts for every 15 entries in the local contest.
Dan Kovar is the local VFW Voice of Democracy Chairman, assisted by Kathy Hartmann, the local VFW Auxiliary Post Co-Chair for the VOD contest. Clark Kolterman is the local Seward High School speech teacher.
Local judges for the event were Jill Johnson of Milford High School and Kelsey Overbeck and Colin Morriesy both of Concordia University in Seward.
