SHS Quiz Bowl Teams Place Second in Novice and Third In Varsity Tourney at LNE Quiz Bowl Tourney
Nine Seward High Quiz Bowl teams participated in the recent, prestigious Lincoln Northeast Quiz Bowl held in Lincoln at Northeast High School, and represented the high school well, bringing home two trophies on Saturday, September 12! Placing second in the Freshman /Sophomore Tourney was the SHS Freshman team C consisting of Ryan Wall, Garret Kuss, Jack Yelden, Alec Sackschewsky and Sheldon Bale-losing in the Champion match to Omaha Creighton Prep. The SHS Varsity team E placing third in the overall competition was composed of members Even Mettenbrink, Will Helmer, Will Brown, Daniel Petersen and Clarke Chandler. They lost in the semi-finals to the Gretna, which won the tourney, followed by Omaha Creighton Prep, who placed second. The SHS Varsity team defeated Lincoln Northeast for third overall!
SHS Team A was composed of Josh Sherman, Nolan Homp, Wyatt Shafer, Jacob Shafer, and Jayden Germer. Team B was composed of Megan Ryan, Nate Ketner, Josh Hendrickson and Elise Bohning. SHS Team C’s members included Jake Marshall, Grace Orwen, Sydney Erickson and Kevin Lyon and SHS Team D for Varsity included Bryson Schluckebier, Michael Brown, Emma Orwen and Noah Urkoski. The SHS Novice team members for Grades 9-10 included Team B Kiernan Baker, Trynity Bearup, Gracie Sullivan, Dalton Ashmore and Bailey Mooney. The members of Team C were Thomas Ringler, Chase Prochnow and Molly Newburn and Clint Koetter, while the members of Team D were Chris Galusha, Greta Hughes and Daniel Rudebusch.
The teams each played three rounds in the morning and a single elimination in the afternoon, based on wins and total points generated in the morning. The tourney was based on general knowledge in a variety of topics, associated with the typical high school curriculum.
The contest was sponsored by the Lincoln Northeast Quiz Bowl team, directed by Steve Eckman of Lincoln Northeast. Roy Smith, of Omaha, served as the Quiz Bowl Master. The Seward teams were sponsored by the School District of Seward, High Ability Learner Program. Clark Kolterman served as the coach and sponsor for the SHS teams for the day.
Schools participating in one of the first tourneys of the season included Omaha Creighton Prep, Lincoln Northeast, Lincoln South West, Lincoln High, Lincoln East, Tekamah /Herman, Milford, Elkhorn, Elkhorn South, Gretna, Seward, Columbus and0 Logan, Iowa.
