Seward High School students and staff celebrated College Week October 12-15

New to this year’s activities were a QR Code Scavenger hunt and an Apply2College Day

The QR Scavenger hunt, designed by technology students William Brown, Benjamin Galusha, and Bryson Schluckebier, added a new level of excitement to the building as students used their iPads to scan the QR code, answer the questions it asked, then proceed to the next clue somewhere else in the building.

Senior Megan Runyan enjoyed the QR code hunt.

“This really added more excitement to the week,” Runyan said. “We learned more about our teachers and fun facts about colleges.”

One thing that Runyan learned about Liz Thomsen, SHS art teacher, was that Thomsen gave up an internship with National Geographic and Disney World to teach art.

Another addition to College Week was the Apply2College Day. Seniors had the opportunity to apply to any college they are considering. More than 70 new applications were generated Wednesday morning. That is in addition to the more than 60 applications that seniors had already submitted.

Admissions representatives from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, Concordia University, University of Nebraska at Kearney, and Southeast Community College were in attendance to assist students with his/her applications.

Bailey Haas, SHS seniors, appreciated the help the college reps provided.

“I applied to two colleges that day and the help the reps and other students who had already applied gave me made the process go a lot faster,” Haas said.

Fellow senior Tommy Wickerd agreed.

“It would have taken me a lot longer without the assistance,” Wickerd said. “I like having the opportunity to complete the application in school.”

After submitting an application, seniors signed their names to a banner of various colleges and military branches so other students could see where they applied.

Other activities taking place during the annual College Week was a “Did You Know” quiz, staff visiting with students about the colleges they attended, staff wearing college gear, College Fair bar code signup, and drawings for post-secondary prizes.
