Seward High Students Participate in Elkhorn South Quiz Bowl Tourney
Six teams from SHS participated in the first Quiz Bowl of the New Year, traveling to Elkhorn South for their annual, major Quiz Bowl event. The contest featured ten rooms of teams competing on both the Varsity level and Novice levels of competition. The contest featured a round robin event in the morning with a single elimination tourney in the afternoon, with team placement based on the wins and losses and points generated by the teams in the morning rounds.
The teams consisted of SHS Varsity Team A-Will Brown, Ben Galusha, Evan Mettinbrink and Josh Hendrickson, Varsity Team B-Elise Bohning, Montana Hill, Emma Orwen, and Bryson Schluckebier, and Varsity Team C consisted of Nolan Homp, Kevin Lyon, Sydney Erickson and Grace Orwen. The Novice Team #1 was composed of Ryan Wall, Carson Core, Alec Sackschewsky, Garrett Kuss and Jack Yelden, Novice Team #2 was Chris Galusha, Greta Hughes, Evan Nottingham, Clint Koetter and Novice #3 members included Wyatt Shafer, Jayden Germer, Jake Marshall and Brady Smith. Clark Kolterman served as the team’s coach and sponsor.
In the morning Varsity Team A defeated all their teams- defeating Nebraska City, Omaha Christian A and Omaha Christian B, The Varsity Team B defeated Omaha Christian B and lost to Elkhorn South A and Lincoln High Southwest, a the Varsity Team C lost to Platteview HS and defeated Concordia High of Omaha, Nebraska City High and Logan High of Logan Iowa.
The Novice Team A defeated the Logan Iowa High team and the Creighton Prep Team C and lost to Platteview High and Omaha Christian High. The Novice Team B defeated the Logan High Team of Iowa and then lost to Norris and Creighton Prep A and B teams and the Novice Team C defeated the Woodbine Iowa High team and the Columbus Novice team but lost to the Elkhorn B team and Norris Novice team.
In the afternoon, the Novice Team tourney featured Seward Novice #1 defeating Marian HS and losing to Elkhorn High, the Novice Team #2 beat Woodbine High and lost to Norris and the Seward Novice Team #3 defeated Columbus and lost to Elkhorn South Team A. Norris won the Novice Tourney and Elkhorn South was runner-up!
The Varsity Team from SHS A was the 6th seed in the tourney and lost to Creighton Prep in their first round, SHS Varsity B defeated Columbus High and lost to Norris and the SHS Varsity Team C defeated Omaha Christian and lost to Columbus High in the afternoon single elimination tourney. Elkhorn South won the tourney and Creighton Prep was first runner-up.
