SHS Participates at the GFWC/NFWC Statewide Girls Only Quiz Bowl in Seward!

Two teams from SHS participated in the recent GFWC/NFWC Girls Only Quiz Bowl event at the Seward Civic Center. Team A/Seward Gold included Grace Orwen, Nana Abenaa Wright, Shea Peery and Hannah Core-all SHS Seniors and Team Blue/B were a team of Freshmen girls from SHS and included Brie Johnson,Emily Lintt, MacKynna Gross, Camryn Jensen, Emily O’Kief, and Alexis Hiser.  The teams were sponsored locally by the GFWC Seward Woman’s Club, GFWC Seward Jr. Women’s Club and the School District of Seward High Ability Learner Program.  Both teams participated in the morning Round Robin and qualified for the afternoon single elimination tourney. 

Three high schools were declared their division Champion at the recent GFWC NFWC “Girl’s Only” Quiz Bowl tourney held at the Seward Civic Center on Wednesday, October 19^th, 2016 in an all day, general knowledge quiz bowl completion involving 40 teams from across the state and into Iowa!  The annual tourney is sponsored by the Nebraska Federation of Women’s Clubs, INC (NFWC) and was hosted by the GFWC Seward Woman’s Club.

There were three tournaments, held simultaneously, each tourney based on school size.  The winners in the large school division were Champions-Bellevue East High School, coached by Dave Bossman, Second Place-Grand Island Northwest High School, Third Place -Gretna High.  In the middle size school division, Champion was Logan Magnolia High of Logan, Iowa, Second Place-Arlington High, Third Place-Wahoo High.  In the small school division-Champion was Howells/Dodge High, Second Place--Friend High, Third Place-- Oakland Craig. 

Trophies and medals were awarded to the First Place team and the runner –up team was also presented a trophy from the NFWC, Inc.  The awards were presented by GFWC NFWC Representatives Tara Plasek –the GFWC NFWC State Junior Director and Jean Kolterman, GFWC NFWC Past President and Quiz Bowl Chairman for the GFWC NFWC.

The tourney was hosted by an all-volunteer force to make the event happen.   Volunteer readers and judges for the event were Tara Plazek , Sue Imig and Pat Ohlmann-all of Seward, Wyatt Dybdal of Pleasant Dale, David Bossman of Bellevue, Steve Eckman of Lincoln, along with Clark Kolterman, who also served as the SHS project coordinator.  SHS Assistant Athletic Director, Charles Gebhardt served as the Quiz Bowl Master for the day.

Volunteer SHS Timers and Scorer Keepers included Jayden Germer, Wyatt Shafer, Jarod Harris, Austin Dobrusky, Andrew Gokie, Gavin Hemling, Zach Ellingson, Ben Myers, Quinten Chesterfield, David Clark, Kaine Johnson, Jawaun Hurley Washington, Nathan Lewis, Morgan Kavulak.

There were 40 teams in the tourney, with high schools represented from Bellevue East, Elkhorn, Elkhorn South, Gretna, Ralston, Lincoln Northeast, Grand Island Northwest, Arlington, Bennington, Central City, Crete, Kearney Catholic, Logan Magnolia of Logan, Iowa, Seward, Wahoo, York, Cross County, East Butler, Exeter/Milligan, Filmore Central, Friend, Fullerton, Heartland of Henderson, Howells/Dodge, Humphrey, McCool Junction, Oakland Craig, Osceola, Sandy Creek, Shelby/Rising City, Thayer Central.

This is the tenth year of this “Girls Only” Quiz Bowl, sponsored by the GFWC NFWC for girls in the greater Nebraska region.  The Nebraska Federation of Women’s Clubs, INC is the state affiliate with the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC)-serving under the theme of “Volunteer!”
