GFWC NFWC Annual 2020 “Girls Only” State Quiz Bowl held in Seward on October 7th!

The GFWC Nebraska Federation of Women’s Club’s 17th annual “Girl’s Only” Quiz Bowl was held at the Seward Civic Center on Wednesday, October 7th, 2020 in an all-day general knowledge tourney involving 27 school teams from high schools across the State of Nebraska.  The annual event was coordinated by GFWC chairman, Jean Kolterman of Seward.

The SHS Quiz Bowl Teams included members Natalie Axt, Grace Roberts, Elianah Wunderlich, Lydia Lobmeryer, Taylor Hostert, Krystyn Harris, Maddie Viger, Ella Gray, Clarie Novak and Emily Gokie. 

The Seward High Quiz Bowl Team A consisting of Madalyn Viger, Claire Novak, Emily Gokie and Ella Gray was named Third Place over all in the large School Division. 

The tourney was created and promoted for “Girls Only” to assist in allowing High School girls to become even more familiar, confident and comfortable in a quiz bowl setting, as they compete among their peers and giving the participants more experience for future Quiz Bowl events with mixed boy/girl teams.

There were three size divisions for the annual general knowledge quiz bowl event.  In the Small School Division, the winners included Champion/First Place-Howells-Dodge coached by Traci Sindelar, First Runner-up-Cross County High of Stromsburg-Coached by Joanna Nielsen, Third Place-Friend High coached by Jacob Smiley, and Fourth place-Dorchester High coached by Sandy Serverance. 

In the Medium School Division, the winners included Champion/First Place-Milford High-coached by Sandra Meisman, Runner-up was Central City High Team A –coached by Brandon Wright, Third Place-Central City Team B also coached by Brandon Wright and Centennial High in Utica-coached by Rebecca Pair.

In the Large School Division, the Champion/First Place was awarded o Gretna High A, coached by Rick Arch, First Runner-up was Norris High Team A-coached by Joe Hornung-Scheer, Third Place was awarded to Seward High Team A and Fourth Place was awarded to Grand Island Northwest High School, coached by Katrina Rother.

The two top winning teams each received a trophy with the Champion team members each receiving a special individual medal.  

The event featured a round robin “practice rotation” in the morning, with teams competing against each other, based on size of schools. The morning contest featured three divisions –Large School, Medium School and Small School.  In the afternoon, a single elimination tourney was held, with the schools seeded by the three sizes and seeded based on number of winning rounds in the morning, point total and highest individual score.  A pizza lunch, hosted by the GFWC Seward Woman’s Club was featured for the coaches, judges, volunteers and readers over the noon hour.

Schools competing in the contest included Bennington, Norris, Grand Island Northwest, Gretna, Seward, and York in the Large School Division.  In the Medium School Division the teams included Centennial High in Utica, Central City, Kearney Catholic, Milford, and Oakland Craig.  The Small School Division included schools from Cross County, Dorchester, Exeter-Milligan, Friend, Hampton, Heartland-Henderson, Howells/Dodge and McCool Junction, with many of the schools sending two teams.

The tourney was coordinated by Jean Kolterman, with the GFWC Nebraska Federation of Women’s Club’s, INC., assisted by members of the GFWC Seward Woman’s Club and areal volunteers.  Volunteer readers for the day included Sue Imig, Pat Ohlmann, Dr. Louis Reith, Joanna Treas –all from Seward, Jenni Erhart from Osceola, Kathy Wilcox from Crete, Joe Hornung-Scheer of Norris High, Rebecca Pair from Centennial High in Utica and Melissa Pohl of Seward High. Everyone involved with the program is a volunteer for the event.

Jean Kolterman-GFWC NFWC representative served as the coordinator for the day, assisted by Clark Kolterman and Quiz Master-Riley Nuttleman-all of Seward.
